France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Wine 1 of Zoom blind. Raspberry notes on the nose and the lighter red fruit on the palate. Not a lot of tannin, solid acidity. I liked this more than the rest, as this had very nice red fruit with good balance. This isn't powerful in any way, though I thought on the second day it added some nice slightly darker notes.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Wine 2 of Zoom blind. This is a big boy, with quite a bit of good structure. Dark in color with quite a bit of tannin. However, there's a shortness on the finish, which may be a result of its youth.
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
Wine 3 of Zoom blind. This was a really interesting wine. There was just a touch of cola on the nose, but not very much. On the palate there was some nice high toned raspberry fruit, with some good density on the mid palate. The finish had an odd woody flavor - not oak, but wood; unusual. A good wine that didn't obviously stand out as a ringer in a Burgundy blind, though some people did think at first it was new world. Definitely got better with more air.
Wine 4 of Zoom blind. The winemaker is inspired by Claude Dugat, and it shows - this is big, ripe, slightly oxidative and nearly everyone had this down as non-Burgundy. Not my style at all.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Wine 5 of Zoom blind tasting. I remain confused by this producer, as this was a perfectly fine but utterly boring wine. While most of the other participants finished it, several also called this as one of the ringers because it seemed to lack any sense of "place". Which isn't entirely fair - there is absolutely nothing wrong with this wine! But in my experience with this producer, this is consistent.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
Wine 6 of Zoom blind. Another blind, another 2013 Cornu winner! This was a substantial wine with dark fruit, good structure, good tannin and quite a bit of acidity. There was a long finish and on day two this gained quite a bit of complexity in the mid-palate. This is not the most nimble of wines, but it is excellent, especially for the price, with room to improve.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Wine 7 of Zoom blind. The second best wine of the tasting for me, and easily better than the Clos St. Jean opened last year. This has the slightly high toned fruit of Volnay on the nose and the front palate, but doesn't quite have the structure or iron on the finish. A very nice wine that was tough for everyone to call, but probably the most balanced wine of the night. Not sure this has all that much more to gain with time, but also likely not fading.
