Flight 1 - Blind non-burgs (2 Notes)

  • 2017 Whitcraft Winery Chardonnay Pence Ranch 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Nose: The nose is fresh and forward with red apples, melons, pineapple notes, pears, oranges, lemon peels, vanilla, and custard tones. The fruit is well balanced but it lacks some depth that would really drive it.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with sharp, medium+ acidity. The acidity cuts and is a bit biting at this time with forward tones of red apples, melons, pineapples, pears, oranges, and custard notes.

Overall: This was blind and certainly felt like Chardonnay, but not from Burgundy like most of the lineup. There is more of a forward quality to this with borderline tropical fruits and orchard fruits.

  • 2017 Martin Woods Chardonnay Eola - Amity Hills 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Nose: The nose is fragrant and fresh with lemons, peaches, pears, apples, vanilla, yellow flowers, and saline notes. There is good depth and balance with it showing a very attractive side.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with sharp, medium+ acidity. There is a bit of sting and youth to the acidity but the feel is well balanced with peaches, pears, lemons, apples, vanilla, and saline.

Overall: I would like to see how this develops with a few years to it. There is a real vibrancy at the moment but I can see it developing into something more round and deeper.

Flight 2 - Joseph Colin and Fontaine-Gagnard (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Joseph Colin Chassagne-Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

Nose: The nose is fresh and balanced with red apples, navel oranges, meyer lemons, spring-time florals, vanilla beans, and brioche notes. While this isn't the most complex nose, there is excellent depth and class.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with tart, medium+ acidity. There is good density and texture to the feel with red apples, navel oranges, meyer lemons, spring-time florals, vanilla, and some custard notes.

Overall: This was on pop and pour and it probably needed some air to really show itself. There is excellent depth for a village-level wine with excellent balance. This could probably use a few years to fully come together, but this is a real winner for the level.

  • 2017 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: The nose is aromatic and balanced from the get go filling the glass with quince, red apples, peaches, spiced pears, seashells, smoke, white florals, all on top of an underlying minerality. There is very good depth with an open-knit expression that is very enticing.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with crisp, medium+ acidity. The feel is slightly larger, but still well balanced with quince, red apples, spiced pears, peaches, smoke, white florals, and some mineral notes.

Overall: This is really pretty right now and certainly has more to give. There is excellent balance across the nose and palate with good depth and expression. I would love to see where this goes with about 3 years and well after that if it can avoid premox.

  • 2017 Joseph Colin Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Blanc 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru

Nose: There is excellent depth, balance, and freshness as it quickly opens up in the glass with pears, apples, fresh picked citrus, marmalade, vanilla, and some wood spice notes. This shows good complexity with the oak note poking through slightly right now.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with crisp, medium+ acidity. The acidity provides a nice spine with pears, apples, fresh picked citrus, marmalade, and wood notes. The feel has a silky texture that is backed up with a long and pleasing finish.

Overall: This is a wonderful, young Saint-Aubin. There is a lot of freshness to the fruit that is backed up with excellent balance. The oak is still present, but it is more part of the whole rather than a prominent note.

Flight 3 - Sauzets (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: This saw a lot of air and it really helped as the nose was wide open, complex, and deep with apples, fresh picked citrus tones, saline, peaches, white fruits, pears, vanilla, orange blossoms, mint, ginger, and crushed rocks. There is excellent depth with a pristine quality to the nose.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with lip-smacking, medium+ acidity. The feel has wonderful texture and depth with pears, apples, fresh picked citrus tones, peaches, vanilla, orange blossoms, mint, and crushed rocks.

Overall: This was given a lot of air in the decanter and it helped a lot. This was glorious for a such a young Puligny Premier Cru with tremendous depth and style across the nose and palate that favors more white fruits. I would like to see where this can go with about 3-5 years as it comes more into itself.

  • 2017 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Canet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: The nose is pristine and poised with saline, peaches, apples, pears, mineral notes, white fruits, lemon peels, acacia flowers, limes, and peach blossoms. There is excellent depth with there being a quiet tension as well that adds extra intrigue to the wine.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with racy, high acidity. The acidity is electric and mouthwatering while the feel carries over the pristine quality on the nose along with saline, peaches, apples, pears, white fruits, lemon peels, limes, and acacia flowers.

Overall: This saw about 5+ hours of air in the decanter in a fridge. This could use several years of aging to fully come together but there is a ton to like right now. There is an immense amount of poise and salinity that really draws you in and contemplate.

Flight 4 - Ramonets (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: The nose is deep and aromatic, filling the glass with meyer lemons, orange peels, apples, smoke, yellow florals, toast, mineral notes, and some hints of saline. It's easy to get lost in this nose with it showing an understated power to boot.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with mouthwatering, medium+ acidity. The acidity is sharp and youthful while the feel is deep and polished with meyer lemons, orange peels, apples, yellow florals, smoke, mineral notes, and saline.

Overall: This is beautiful right now and can certainly grow into something more. There is great depth, balance, and poise across the nose and palate with a pleasing and long finish.

  • 2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Boudriotte 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: There is a lot of lift and elegance with lemon curds, red apples, pears, stone fruits, vanilla, white florals, custard, vanilla beans, minerals, and saline. This showed a more refined style while showing off lots of depth at this young stage.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with tart, medium+ acidity. The acidity has some cut to it with the elegance showing off even more along with lemon curds, red apples, pears, white florals, custard, smoke, vanilla, and saline notes.

Overall: This is a wonderful Chassagne. There is an immense amount of depth and elegance but it seems like it is holding back just a bit at this time. Once this fully comes together it'll be a knockout.

  • 2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Nose: The nose is a bit coiled up and robust with peaches, red apples, meyer lemons, pears, yellow flowers, smoke notes, and crushed rocks. This isn't as expressive as the Les Ruchottes or La Boudriotte but still shows fresh orchard fruits and good depth.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with racy, medium+ acidity. There is a bit of sting with the acidity and the feel shows some density with red apples, peaches, meyer lemons, pears, smoke, and crushed rocks.

Overall: This is certainly on the young side, but is still an excellent Chassagne. It could benefit from 5+ years as there is a lot of stuffing at the moment and it feels coiled up.

Flight 5 - Late-night Rieslings (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Weingut Knoll Riesling Selection Ried Pfaffenberg Steiner 91 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal

Nose: The nose is deep and with richer notes of nectarine, peach, stone fruits, pears, red apples, crushed rocks, yellow florals, and some limes. There is more of a broad shouldered approach here as it took about a half hour to really open up.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with razor sharp, high acidity. The acidity cuts like a hot knife and while the feel is on the larger side, there is still balance and depth with nectarines, peaches, stone fruits, pears, crushed rocks, and yellow florals.

Overall: This is drinking beautifully at this time. It can likely age further as there is certainly room for development, but everything is there right now allowing it to be immensely enjoyable.

  • 2018 Weingut Keller Riesling von der Fels 90 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Nose: The nose is tightly wound but what is poking through is expressive and fresh with limes, peaches, saline, crushed rocks, acacia flowers, nectarines, green apples, and lemon peels.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with biting and razor sharp, high acidity. The acidity is immensely high and comes close to shredding the palate. The feel has excellent texture and balance with limes, peaches, saline, green apples, lemon peels, and crushed rocks.

Overall: I would like to try this in a few years and see if the acidity comes into better balance. Right now, this is all about unbridled potential with its excellent depth and freshness.

  • 2012 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Nose: The nose is fresh, balanced, and forward with white peaches, green apples, honeydew melons, pears, lemon peels, crushed rocks, and white florals.

Taste: The feel is light bodied with crisp, high acidity. The acidity is well integrated and refreshing with the feel showing a feather-like quality with white peaches, green apples, pears, lemon peels, crushed rocks, and some white florals.

Overall: This is an excellent kabinett. It is in great harmony right now if one prefers more primary aromas and flavors. This still has enough to age further and develop but it is really lovely right now.
