Introduction

Week 2 covered mostly white wines. For the tasting component I decided to run through German Rieslings from dry through to sweet. I was able to supplement the Spatlese from Winehouse with some other wines I had in my cellar (I became slightly excited when I saw I had three wines from the same vintage and vineyard).

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2017 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Alte Reben

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    [from Coravin]

The appearance is clear and pale lemon in colour.

The nose is clean with medium(+) intensity aromas, showing primary aromas of floral characters (blossom, jasmine), mineral (slate), stone fruit (nectarine), citrus fruit (lime, lemon, grapefruit), and secondary aromas of autolytic characters (rye bread, pumpernickel). This wine is youthful.

On the palate, the wine is off-dry with high acidity, medium alcohol, and medium body. The flavours have a medium(+) intensity and show primary notes of citrus fruit (lemon, lime, orange), floral character (blossom, jasmine), stone fruit (nectarine, white peach), mineral (slate), and green fruit (red apple, fuji apple), and secondary notes of autolytic characters (rye bread, pumpernickel, beeswax texture). The finish has a long length.

This wine is of an outstanding quality. Can drink now, but has potential for ageing (acidity and sugar can support ageing).
