  • 2013 Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Mountain 'D'

    Medium ruby in colour.

Medium(+) intensity aromas. Ripe black fruits (black cherry, black plum, blackberry, blueberry), oak (cedar, chocolate, vanilla), mineral (graphite), and bottle-age characters (dried leaves, tobacco, dried earth). The wine is developing.

On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium tannin, high alcohol, with a medium(+) body. The flavours have a medium(+) intensity and show notes of black fruits (black cherry, black plum, blackberry, blueberry), oak (cedar, chocolate, vanilla), mineral (graphite), and bottle-age characters (dried leaves, tobacco, dried earth). The finish has a long length.

Nice. The wine is developing well, still showing ripe primary fruit but also starting to present some bottle-age characteristics. The oak treatment is noticeably more integrated than the last time I tasted this wine in 2017. The flavours are concentrated but some heat from the alcohol shows on the finish. The wine is suitable for further ageing, but is drinking very well at the moment (enjoy it now if you prefer a more fruity style of wine).

  • NV Gonzalez-Byass Palomino Fino Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Tío Pepe (Muy Seco-Extra Dry)

WSET Level 3 Online (Week 8, Sparkling wine and Fino Sherry): The appearance is clear and medium lemon in colour.

The nose is clean with medium(+) intensity aromas. There are primary aromas of citrus fruit (overripe lemon), secondary aromas of autolytic characters (sourdough bread), oak (butterscotch), and tertiary aromas of almond and honey. There is also a note of nail polish remover. This wine is fully developed.

On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(-) acidity, low alcohol [for fortified wines], and medium body. The flavour intensity is medium showing primary notes of citrus fruit (overripe lemon), herbal characters (thyme), secondary aromas of autolytic characters (sourdough bread, uncooked pizza dough), oak (butterscotch), and tertiary aromas of almond and honey. The nail polish remover note also shows on the palate. The finish has a medium(+) length.

Very good quality wine; drink now, not suitable for ageing.
