  • 2004 Henri Goutorbe Champagne Grand Cru Special Club 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Nose: The nose is rounded and beautifully balanced with red apples, quince, honeydew, pears, meyer lemons, red flowers, mineral notes, biscuits, brioche, and warm dough. There is excellent depth with an open-knit quality to the nose that is very enticing.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with crisp, high acidity. There is excellent texture and depth to the feel that shows off a level of maturity with red apples, pears, meyer lemons, quince, red flowers, biscuits, brioche, and warm dough.

Overall: One of the things I love about Goutorbe Special Clubs is that they are aged pretty well on release. This has been held for a bit and it is showing in a wonderful spot with great interplay between the autolytics and the rounded fruit notes.

  • 2000 Clos du Marquis 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nose: The nose is open and well balanced with red cherries, cranberries, currants, spice box notes, roses, cedar, tobacco, and leather tones. There is good depth but this lacks somewhat in complexity.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. There is a little stiffness to the tannins but otherwise, the structure has effectively resolved. The feel is well balanced with red cherries, cranberries, currants, spice box notes, tobacco, cedar, and leather tones.

Overall: This is right in its zone. There is a real sour red fruit quality that is showing well while the secondary and tertiary notes have harmonized beautifully. It does lack some depth and complexity but on the whole this is a lovely bordeaux that is right at its maturity level for a long time.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Nose: This nose is straight up pretty and refined. I wish I had a bottle of this on my own to just spend time with as there is a lot of depth and class with red cherries, raspberries, cigar wrappers, rose petals, cedar, herbs, pencil lead, currants, spice notes, and a lot of perfumes.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and silky (but youthful), medium+ tannins. There is a lot of poise and refinement to the feel that is backed up by deep tones of red cherries, raspberries, currants, cigar wrapper, herbs, and cedar.

Overall: This is gorgeous and beginning to find itself in a real great place. There is an immense amount of depth and balance that comes with the age and while it's getting into a great place, it feels like there is plenty to go.
