Flight 1 - Apertif Flight (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Walter Scott Chardonnay Freedom Hill Vineyard

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    (11/28/2020)

Served PNP into Grassl Liberte glass and tasted over two days. Flinty reduction, citrus, and minerals dominate the nose. This might be the most reduced of Walter Scott's I've had. Even at 5 years old, this wine is tight and reduced. I wish I had more, but this is the last bottle. It seems this one would easily go another 10 years. On the palate, there is citrus and apple but such delicate balancing acidity. Oak is well integrated and I no longer get any butterscotch, but nice richness and great mouthfeel. The finish is long with citrus and apple notes lingering. This may be my favorite WS Chardonnay to date. Fruit, minerality and acidity just dancing in my mouth. Very impressive wine.

  • 2014 Tablas Creek Pinot Noir Full Circle

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

    (11/28/2020)

Dark Dark in the glass. Dark Cherry, leather, dusty tannins and some wood on the nose. Concentrated on the palate with dark cherry flavors. Healthy dose of tannins with a subtle but underlying acidity. Nice med long finish dominated by the tannins. Bigger than its 14.2% ABV would indicate but not overly ripe or any cola notes. Still plenty of structure and I imagine this wine will be drinking well in another 5-10 years. Not exactly my style but ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

  • 2016 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Durant Vineyard

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

    (11/28/2020)

Double Decanted and allowed to rest for 24 Hours. Served in Grassl Cru glass. Served as an aperitif with cheese crackers and shrimp cocktail. The nose was very reticent upon PNP and even after a day decanting. Dusty tannins with hints of brush and subtle herbs on the nose. Unlike the nose, the palate was not shut down. Vibrant tart cherry, cranberry, and some stems adding some herb and complexity. Long finish with fine tannins and great acid throughout. Wine is still super primary with plenty of structure left. Revisit in 5 years. Classic Goodfellow Pinot Noir.

Flight 2 - Dinner Flight (3 Notes)

Paired with Flannery Ribeye and Strip

  • 2012 Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Collection Napa Valley

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    (11/28/2020)

Served with Flannery beef. Decanted for 24 hours before serving. Big Bold fruit, firm tannins and too much oak (strong coconut). Its not well integrated yet and is even more prominent after decant. Its a well made wine in a big opulant style but it needs another 5-10 years IMO

  • 2015 Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 611

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

    (11/28/2020)

It's fairly soft rounded and elegant. The tannins and oak are in nice balance with the jammy black fruit. A little sweet on the finish as with many napa cabernets. Paired nicely with Flannery beef. Drinking well now and for quite a few more years. Very Quaffable

  • 2018 Goodfellow Family Cellars Blanc Whistling Ridge Vineyard

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

    (11/28/2020)

It's a blend that is more than the sum of its parts. Driven by the Riesling but there is so much going on. flowers, stone fruits, and minerality on the nose. The palate leads with lime, minerality, some apple, and spice. I get hints of kiwi and tropical fruits a bit on the mid-palate which rounds into a nice acid-driven finish. The mouthfeel is wonderful, you get hints of the barrel and some oily mouthfeel in a chiseled but slightly rounded wine. Its not easy to describe other than its delicious as always. Served as a digestif after some big Napa cabernets and Flannery beef. Everyone loves this wine. Such a wonderful way to finish a meal. It just lifts and cleanses the palate. Its one of my favorite wines every vintage.
