Introduction

Another chance to share some wines and some slow-cooked lamb

Flight 1 - Bubbly Interloper (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Distinctive Whites (2 Notes)

  • 2018 Foradori Manzoni Bianco Fontanasanta 92 Points

Italy, Trentino Alto-Adige / Veneto, Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT

Really herbal and intriguing on the nose. A nice lifted feeling to the palate and a strong impression of apricots. Not that acidic, but like lots of Italian wines there's also bitterness to keep things in balance. Deep, long and sophisticated. Felt ready, but I could see it being better in a couple of years.

  • 2016 Emidio Pepe Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 92 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

A nice golden colour. Rich and honeyed on the nose, but then surprisingly bright on the palate, with a dryness like a sherry even though it was aromatic in a Gewürztraminer register. Further interest from a vegetal note - celery perhaps? Singular and compelling - very geek-friendly. Came on with air so would have been interesting to spend more time with it.

Flight 3 - Lighter Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2016 Boffalora Valtellina Superiore Pietrisco 93 Points

    Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore

A really joyous, elegant wine, and remarkably fresh and open for a youngish Nebbiolo. Lots of juicy strawberry fruit on the palate and a structural reminder that this isn't a Pinot Noir. Even if I hadn't been with five other people, don't think it would have been long before the bottle was empty.

  • 2014 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Santo Spirito 93 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

This was delicious, and felt like it had been opened at the perfect time. A flood of cherries and a little hint of oak, which made it a nice complement to the Valtellina we drank it with. Deep and relatively rich, but with plenty of acidity and tannin that combined with the fruit to force you to keep taking another sip.

Flight 4 - Deeper Reds (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 92 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Overriding impression of elegance: this might be Brunello from a warm vintage, but the estate's early-picking philosophy shone through. Plenty of energy but also a dusty, standoffish, aristocratic quality. Will be even more enjoyable with some additional tertiary development.

  • 2008 Luigi Tecce Taurasi Poliphemo Paternopoli 92 Points

    Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG

I really enjoyed this, which was admirably open for business. High acidity yet also creamy and full bodied, with deep strawberry and a touch of game. Tannins remain grippy at the end, but not at all offputtingly. Delicious.

Flight 5 - Stickies (2 Notes)

Closing

Not sure I've attended an event where the wines all performed so similarly - impossible to say which one I preferred as they all shone brightly, but the posher dessert wine is the one I can still 'taste' today.
