Introduction

The theme tonight was Cortons. Six of us gathered at Martina. Since it was a rather toasty, sunny evening on the patio, it was a shame we didn't have any Corton Charlie to start with. But we had a nice mix of starters regardless. The reds tonight were a lot of fun, particulary compelling was the '82 Faively Corton from Mag. Food was also very good, and it was great to be back here in person.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2015 Guy Larmandier Champagne Signé François Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light medium gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Pear, spice, bitters, yeasty, honey, quite spicy, dense and full bodied. This is a bigger, bold style with a little oxidative edge to it. There's a lot going on here - good stuff.

  • 2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Vintage 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 40 minuntes. 61%PN, 34%C, 5%PM. It's been 18 months since last having this, so it was fun to get a chance to check in. Excellent as always this really performs well, earthy, ocean aromas, citrus zest, lemon, chalk, lime and with great dry extract and tons of minerality. These are killer. 93+pts or better.

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2018 Domaine Billaud-Simon Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale gold color. Drank a small glass over 45 minutes. Light, floral, red apple, bright and stony nose. The palate is youthful, limestone, lacquer, a bit bitter on the palate, very dry with lemon zest and citrus and but mineral driven. Needs some time to settle down.

Flight 3 (5 Notes)

  • 1982 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Light medium red color with a 5mm orange margin. Drank two glasses from Magnum over 2 hours. Same bottle as Chablis28. This was a beautiful expression of Corton in all its wonderfully aged glory. Textbook iron and blood, dried rose petals, porcini mushroom, red cherry, dried earth and boullion resonates on the nose. The palate is equally blissful with its maturity and class shining brightly; beefy, tart red cherry, dried cherry, iron, blood meal, dired leaves, mushroom dust, soy, and fine grained tannins on a lengthy finish. This was a prisitine example of aged Burgundy magnified by the magnum format. Just a sheer joy to experience - thanks for sharing this Steve and Candie.

  • 1994 Domaine Tollot-Beaut Corton 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. A bit more rustic on the palate, light-medium bodied, sous bois, smokey, roasted meat and dried cherry fruits. Holding up, but probably best to drink these.

  • 2002 Vincent Bouzereau Corton-Clos des Fiètres 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Medium red color with a 7mm orange transition. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Damp forest floor and pungent mushroom, distinct iodine, red cherry and red currants, dried herbs on the nose. The palate is fairly full bodied but quite lithe, iodine, minerals, dark cherry and red cherry, red currants, lots of great dried herbs, very earthy and shroomy, cherry sweet tart essence. This was really good and it was even better the next night when we finished the last dregs off up at the lake where it added a pretty floral perfume. 92+ to 93 day one and 93 day two.

  • 2003 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey 90 Points

Dark red color. PNP, full bodied, deep cherry and blakc cherry, a hint of sweet brown sugar and a touch of earth to the slightly coarse tannins.

  • 2008 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Corton-Renardes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Medium dark red color. Slow-O for 3 hours. See Chablis28's note for speciifics. Drank a glass over an hour. This brings more fruit to the table than everything before it. Black raspberry, tart huckleberry, savory, crushed stones. This comes off a little sharp and intense at first, then you see this evolve; pure and lovely, dark berries on the palate, cassis, fresh and lively, powdery yet somewhat firm tannins say I still want more time. Delicious now, even better in a couple years as one would expect from Gaunoux.
