Introduction

Lucky enough to try another pair of 1990 Bordeaux - was just discussing about how we have influenced each other's wine tastes, and I am lucky enough to have got to learn a lot about old Bordeaux and appreciating them over the course of the last year. Burgundy is still my first love but you have to admire the pedigree of these traditionalists from another era. On the day, the Pape Clement outclassed the Magdelaine.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • NV Étienne Calsac Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Les Rocheforts

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

2018 base, 2g/l dosage, 100% Chardonnay. Plenty of green apples, creamy and rounded texture but it still had good energy and tension. Developed yeasty notes with some air. Quality of the base vintage shone through on the clean finish.

  • 1990 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

A more seductive vintage of Magdelaine, much more hedonistic than any that I have tried before. Not the best bottle I think as the appearance was a little cloudy and bricking in colour. Lovely floral and lifted nose, not as much structure as I expected on the palate but it had a lovely red-fruited character and acid backbone. I popped and poured this but would definitely benefit from aeration, the fruit was riper and fuller with time.

  • 1990 Château Pape Clément

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Classic Bordeaux, guessed Margaux because of the elegance behind the structured tannins. Lovely weight to it with dense and mature black fruit, this was less ripe, more tannic than many of the other 1990s I have tried, but still had a wonderful finesse to it. Apparently the tell-tale sign to wines from Graves is scorched earth on the finish which was definitely present here. Unfortunately this estate has turned to the dark side, a recent vintage I tried a couple years back was revolting. One of my favourite 1990s that I have tried.
