Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Ruinart Champagne Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Way too young, but this was quite a lovely drop. It had a really nice nose, with lovely, aromatic wafts of cream, toasted bread and yeast floating around a core of ripe red apples. Lovely stuff. The palate was where this really took off though. Powerful, weighty, yet effortlessly polished, with a lovely purity to its flavours of white fruit, mineral and nuts a little touch of spice trailing away into a longish finish. Bright acidity and a really fine mousse made up the rest of the picture. Still a baby, but this was a really well-made champagne. Good now, but this will be a beauty in 10 to 15 years.

  • NV Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

A simple, but yummy champagne to start the night. The nose had a touch of yeast and some toasted bread alongside side fleshy ripe apple notes. The palate was soft and fleshy, but with a nice freshness and elegant mousse to it, opening up in stylish notes of ripe red apples and white peach, leading into a neat, if rather shortish finish just touched with a little bit of mineral. Simple, a touch on the light side, but very enjoyable.

  • 2016 Domaine Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

This is really starting to fire on all cylinders now. Similar notes to a bottle I had a few months back, starting out with a nicely floral nose with aromas of cherries and berries, with a little earthy mineral at the side. This just that this felt a little lighter on the palate when first popped and poured, and needed just a little time and and air to put on a bit of weight. Otherwise, it was a fresh, elegant expression of Gevrey, with lovely transparent notes of red berries and cherries, some floral touches, and then an accompaniment of mineral and a little spice - all this nicely woven together on a seam of fine tannins and nice acidity. A really nice Gevrey village. No blockbuster, but a real delight to drink. Great with roasted duck too.
