Introduction

Once again, a great pairing of food with the wines that were brought. Wine of the night was the 1996 Angelus, 2nd was the Heitz Marthas. I wonder how the 1998 Château Trotanoy will taste in 5 years....

  • 1991 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Pop and pour. The nose is cigar and scorched earth, tea-like qualities. There was significant eucalyptus at one point, but aside from that moment it was mostly in the background. The anise builds with time. Tobacco came out at the 2 hour mark. What I appreciated about this wine was the amazing complexity both on the nose and palate. I personally thought this wine was all secondary/tertiary, so didn't think there was any fruit, the other 3 tasters felt that there was. Around 2.5 hours or so, the wine started giving up and fell off the cliff.

  • 1994 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

When these old Mondavi reserves are on, they are ON. And this one was. Blue fruit, perfumed, lots of pepper, savory vegetal qualities.

  • 1996 Château Angélus 96 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Slow O a couple hours. This was nice from the beginning, but around 1+ hours in glass it became extremely special. It started out with soft blue fruit and leather, maybe a touch astringent. But the flavors built, it became richer, more expansive, just puts you in your happy place (assuming you like aged Bordeaux) and asks you "What more do you want?"

  • 1998 Château Trotanoy 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Decanted 4 hours. This drinks really young. It has a great structure with dark red fruit. Tobacco is evident. 94 on potential.
