Retail $165. Ridiculously Heavy Bottle (920g; 2lbs 0.4oz). 66% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir. I drink a ton of champagne. A. Ton. But. I do not drink much *prestige* champagne since, well, it's really expensive. Case in point. I have a bit of a history (but far from extensive) with Pommery's top wine, more than any other? But this is my first 2002. Yeah, a lot to unpack there. What needs no unpacking? This is spectacular. Whoa. Yellow, and well on the way to golden in the glass, with a nutty mélange of citrus rind and yeasty goodness. Whoa. A surprisingly vibrant sparkle on the palate with an equally surprising tartness that smacks the lips in joyful engagement. A word salad meaning this is damned good from the jump. Smoky, yeasty, tart, engaging, holy cow and my goodness, this is tasty. And likely still young. Another ten years, easy. Outstanding. 96 Points.
Just delicious! Hitting that wonderful point when this tête de cuvée brings to the fore in a beautiful light amber color a palate with richly blended toasty/nutty/lemon hints / and a creamy undertone. Only missing a tad more acid- backed chiseled backbone. Delightful now and a real food wine.93-94

Dinner at Chengdu Impression (Chicago, IL): Very intense notes of toasted bread and biscuity quality. Shows the ripeness of the vintage and has pretty good balance overall.

This is a lovely, mature Champagne! Fine, small bubbles, great bouquet with brioche and roasted hazelnuts. Very well-balanced taste that keeps for a long tine in the mouth. Bravo!

Tasted double blind. My first time tasting this cuvee and it showed very well. All the telltale aromas you’re looking for in a mature Champagne paired with a high but round and integrated acidity. Maybe it is missing a bit of elegance to reach an even higher score but this is easily drinking on a 93/94pts level for me.
TN: Medium expressive nose with bakery, butter and some nutty notes along minerality and dark berries. Inviting and quite precise. On the palate, this is wonderfully complex with dark berries, bakery, butter and nutty notes, some minty/herbal notes, some cola notes. Superb, easy drinking, elegant with a good cut.
Decanting: No extensive decanting needed.

Delicious now! Balanced, but not yet too much ‚brioche‘. Perfect space. My last bottle, but maybe it’s meant to be. Not sure it has too many years on this peak.

Old Guys lunch on Ciao Bella's lovely patio (CV, DM, TS, JV, DD, LS, KB). 80 degrees Friday & 45 degrees Saturday :). We got super lucky Friday by MN standards. I've had this a couple times now and its always been a pleasant surprise. Excellent concentration, intensity and minerality. Definitely knocks on the door Tete Cuvee Champagne but fails to hit the world class finesse of Taittinger, Krug, Dom & Cristal. Very much enjoyed this. Its at its peak. I'd drink up sooner than later.

Old Guys Lunch: Hittin' the Patio (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This showed very well today, and really has been pretty dang consistent over the years. The nose is outstanding, filled with toast, dulce de leche, earth and seashore, roasted nuts, and pear. The palate is is creamy, nutty, freshly torn croissant, ducle de leche, brine, pear, ocean, long finish. Delicious. 93+ to 94pts.

Guy's Night: ABBC (Anything but Bordeaux and Chardonnay) (Joe & Khem's Place, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Toffee, sea breeze, dulce de leche, minerals, baked pear on the nose. The palate shows baked pear, nuts, chalk, dulce de leche, and a strong mineral denisty with a mineral driven finish. I found this pretty engaging and really not showing any significant oxidative character. 92+pts.
Anything Goes but Cab and Bordeaux! (Joe's Bistro): I found this Champagne drinking quite well....some thought it was oxidized, but I didn't sense that at all, neither in style nor in this bottle. But perhaps I am less sensitive than others. IN any event, this was drinking pretty darn good and, IMO, was a good representation of the vintage. This bottle wasn't quite as tasty as previous bottles, but still held its own. The nose and palate were similar to me, showing baked pear and oyster with some straw and chalk notes, and slight toast. All in all it was very enjoyable! Solid 93 for my palate!

Guys night out - ABBC (Anything But Bordeaux or Cabernet): My last bottle. To me, oxidative in style, almost to a fault. I'm not marking this flawed because 4 others appreciated the wine significantly more than me, so I have to assume this is a stylistic preference. These bottles were fabulous when they were younger.

While I do not normally learn toward the Pommery style, this cuvee, in 2002, is drinking so nicely and richly right now! Creamy undertones with yeast, a hint of burnt toast, an almost pleasant herbal tone and lemon on the finish. May not last long in this state but worth consuming now.A good food wine.

Slightly oxidized bottle. This is a champagne with generous ripe red apples atop a panna cotta dessert on the nose and lemon honey is carried in on bright grapefruit juice acidity on the palate. Yeast/toastiness didn't fully come out in the bottle we had.
A nice drink for a casual Friday night after a long week of work.

drank it way too fast as with time it improved so much. But we have 3 more bottles to try so the first one goes faster is understandable. The impresssion is a younger wine, not a 20 years old. But with time, the complexity came through. A very fime bottle indeed!

An almost hedonistic creaminess that led to such incredible enjoyment, particularly with food. Rich, typical brioche nose with a hint of citrus and slightly sweet suggestion before it hit the palate . The bottle consistently delivered a nice mousse, with a wonderfully aged but not dark color, showcasing elegant creaminess, custard, not so much lemon as others have noted, but rather a sense to me of a cream puff with light tentacles of citrus, flowers, and well-balanced acid. while the complexity does not approach that of an Egly or Krug, very, very enjoyable Champagne right now.

Popped and poured and enjoyed over several hours. Rich, creamy and more forward then expected for a 20 year old Champagne. Ripe orchard fruit throughout and still very youthful. I'd expect these to improve as they age further.

A Guys Night to Remember: Old Napa & Right Bank (Jason's, St. Paul, MN): Light gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. This start out more reticent than previous bottles; delicate and subtle on the nose and palate. This slowly put on weight as it came to room temperature. The nose offers subtle pear, French baguette, light toast, and Meyer lemon. The palate builds to show more of the toast from previous bottles, with pear, Meyer lemon, light crisp minerality, balanced and delicate. 93+pts.

Nose: Yeast, saline, brioche and hint of apple blossom.
Palate: Creamy pear, Meyers Lemon, seashell and toast with minerality and a nice mousse-feel going down. Drinking quite well!
Other notes: I think this wine just keeps getting better and better....not sure if it is bottle evolution, the vintage or bottle variation....I suspect a combination of the first two though. A solid 94 and no hurry too open, but won't be disappointed if you do (assuming this is a representative bottle).
I really enjoyed this bottle much better than my first (maybe 4-5 years ago?) - has developed nice secondary oxidative notes (in a good way) with plenty of fruit to balance. It’s middle age and can certainly go longer but is in a great spot now. delicious

Opened and then tasted 30 min later. A bit of funky, almost TCA-like, aromas that seems to blow off after a time in the glass. Yeasty, brioche, mild honeysuckle aromas with some nutty oxidative notes, and ripe apples and some minerals. Nice palate with mild brioche, just ripe apples, good chalky mineral cut, mild oxidative nuttiness, honeysuckle and herbs. Finish is mildly short. Nice, elegant champagne with some richness and showing some aged components. Moderately complex but also delicious and eminently drinkable. One of the favorites in the group.

This was cool, although out of place after the '88 Thienot. Light yellow w/a touch of gold; fine bubbles, foamy creamy with clean chalky mineral cut, apples, tart orchard fruits, cut, but still good concentration. Happy with how this showed. Blind DD at Capital Seafood.

Class in a glass. Not the biggest or the best, but balanced, harmonious, extremely civilized, almost regal. Really delicious and nuanced, super fine beaded mousse, just the right amounts of brioche, ginger, yeast. Smooth operator, enjoy now or over the next 5, maybe 10 years.

Creamy, soft, delicate, with fine mousse, still fairly fresh but at a good and enjoyable place. Nice apple and small pit fruit cloaked in light yeast brioche and hint of hazelnut. Warm and giving but maintains a lite touch and easy to drink. Not as focused as a bit more acidity would have given it better structure which I am finding to be the case with some of the 2002's we tasted recently. Made for a lovely start of an epic food and wine evening. Additional bottles will be put into more immediate rotation as i would expect them to be fun to drink over the next few years but this is not one to keep for old bones. A great daytime Champagne when you want to keep it lite & easy but don't let that disposition fool you as the quality is evident.

Still on the Young side, with caramel and sweet apples on the nose, also a fresh minerality that adds to the complexity. On the plate a lovely elegant mousse, high acidity but also rich sweet apples, mineral, grapefruit and sweet fudge that lasts a good twenty seconds.

Thomas Pinot Noir Vertical (Dan and Elise's, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This was firing on all cylinders for me. A very elegant and sophisticated wine. Excellent nose with red and green apple, yeast, lightly toasted, lightly floral, fine sea air minerality. The palate shines with apple, yeast, toast, almond, and a crystalline minerality all on a energetic bright medium body. 93+ to 94pts.

Another stellar and uniquely different '02 champagne tonight along side the 02 Lanson Noble Cuvee. A little fuller with a touch more orchard fruit and a bit rounder. Complex layers of rich; citrus, orchard, minerality and toast. Slight preference for the Lanson but this was great in its own right.

2002 Vintage Champagne horizontal (Elystan Street, London): When I started drinking champagne I wanted to keep an open mind. But it was at the tender age of 18 that I made up my mind that Pommery was not going to find a place in my cellar based on unacceptable experiences with their Brut Royale. I might have had (the misfortune) to be given 2 or 3 glasses of Pommery since and I was always disappointed. So whenever a very weak champagne in this tasting came up (didn't happen much but Delamotte was one) my guess was Pommery. Well here again and it was correct. I don't know what else to say but this is just uninspiring and the house shouldn't even be allowed to have a "prestige cuvee". Sort of like a Dacia Logan goes premium segment. Just bland, uninteresting. Nah. Avoid, there are so many better option out there.

Color light golden, but not amber. Bubbles are there, but fairly large in size. Hint of vanilla on the nose. Tasting the wine brings up light notes brioche, and ends with faint, but long citrus flavors at the tip of the tongue. Quite nice, but not exceptional. Looking forward to the other three bottles in the cellar, to see how the wine evolves from now on.

Pommery tasting at Maple and Ash (Maple and Ash Chicago, Illinois): Well now, here is something. All the grapes in this from Grand Cru vineyards, 60 % chardonnay and 40 % pinot noir. That combination with the age set this wine apart. The age is apparent on the less aggressive, more-rounded, almost earthy quality. Restrained elegance.

Lovely wine which is drinking beautifully right now. Faint smokiness, with flavors of peach and orange creamsicle. This has good acid spine, but with a touch of creamy sweetness that isn’t overdone. It is easy to drink a lot of this. Well balanced.

Bollinger VVF & Friends (Nico Osteria - Chicago, IL): The nose has creamy, rich orchard fruit. The palate is rich round and toasty, without coming across as heavy. But there is definitely an oaky, sweet and ripe essence to this wine. Fun for a glass or two, but might get tiring after that.

Bollinger VVF et al. (Chicago, IL): L11814014. The thing that stands out to me most here is the toastiness of this wine. It's present on both the nose and the palate, and though it's probably derived from oak, I didn't find this to have the oakiness I would expect from something like Krug or Vilmart. It's also not a very strong toast, more of a lightly toasted brioche or something like that. Nice freshness and vibrancy here, this is showing well now and should be for a while.

Notes from Day 3 open. This showed a touch sweet when it was opened on Sat, and esp. next to the Prevost. Today, it is much better. Loads of biscuit today, with cool mint and grapefruit notes. Good acidity, and a clean, slatey finish. Very nice. Maybe needs more time?

This well-aged wine from a top Champagne vintage is just now ready to drink after 16 years. It has a touch of toast, but it’s the rich, complex texture and fine structure that set it apart. It’s not a dry wine, it feels soft. It is so well integrated, elegant with hints of apples, a layer of minerality and still-fresh final acidity.

Dinner for Blair Walter at Noble Rot (Noble Rot, Wellington, NZ): Lighter gold than the Dom. Again, fine bubbles and good mousse. A more precise, lemony, citric, mineral and stoney bouquet than the Dom. Also that focus and precision evident on palate. Fresh, lively acidity. Still, a Champagne with good volume, power and weight. Citric, wet river boulder, pear, chalky mineral and smoke notes, with some plump creaminess. Again, readily accessible for drinking now. For me, the acid profile here gave it the edge over the Dom.

Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Quite bright and youthful. Decent richness here too and definitely the 2002 vintage helps. Ripe fruit, apple, light honey touches, toast. Mid-straw colour and promising slightly toasted nose, but overt green-apple acidity and short, dusty finish disappoint. A prestige label but below the par of many houses straight 2002s - or indeed other vintages. Great shame that Qatar Doha lounge has swapped to this in place of Billecart Salmon Cuvée N. as this is not in the same league. Does improve in glass, but still short finish

A rather fine champagne. Now precise, seamless, creamy almost and long. Developed notes coming through. Would have thought that the dosage was higher than 5.5 but there you go. Solid backbone though. Does it got sufficient fruit to keep up over time? Needs time to breath if had now. Will drink my remaining four bottles with approx. two year intervals. Bumping this one a point since last time I had it. My last bottle must have bit a little bit off. Same notes as last time but with more added tiny bubbles that gave it a nice lift. Fruits a bit more pronounced. A really good champagne. If you got these I recommend to make sure it's proper chilled and pour down the sides of the glass. NOTES FROM LAST TIME. Good champagne. Yellow plums, fresh, concentrated. Lees and baked bread. Some light jam and dried fruits. VERY balanced.
Wow... this will be legendary! Great and light roasty. Its concentrated, but still a light champagne. It is very balanced and an very good champagne. One of the finest i have tasted! It is hard to put a finger and describe something this beautiful as everything is so well intigrated. Long aftertaste and a very nice acidity. The acidity is mild, but precent in all aspects and very good.
This is not champagne. This is art.
After an hour of heat and airation : more open and more great notes of age. Very balanced. I feel like it lacks a bit of taste concentration in the mouth, and the mouth feel does not match the nose. Still one of the absolute best champagnes i have ever tasted.
A bit later:
Vine has gotten a bit hotter. 18 c)Does not show any more aromas, but the flavor has gotten more consentrated, open and complex. Now it is matcing its smell and feelimg like a "right" wine. This is a true 96p wine. I would like to call it 97, but it is not ripe enough
The more it stays in the glas the more mature jam and rasins it gives the notes of. This is just lovely.

Pairing Champagnes to Black Cats (Calistoga, CA): Great to the dry side of '02 bubbles...The Pommery '02 was more on the dry side, and not with many yeast/butter notes. Much more on the floral and citrus notes, I would say. While some people noted that they preferred the 2002 Pommery Cuvée Louise I will note that by the level of the bottle, the Pierre Paillard '02 was running faster. If you prefer less oak on the palate and more floral on PnP, take the Pommery. Few hours enjoyment, more of the Pierre Paillard. Can't decide? try them both. A solid 92+/93 for me, ymmv

I liked this, although Marybeth was less impressed. I found it less dry, a little more sweet than other CT tasters (looking at the notes, this wine is all over the map). Focused, citrus and tart apple and a nice floral note. It seemed more a crowd pleasing easy drink than one to analyze. Not quite up the the level of other '02 tête de cuvées I've had, but still nice.

I respect Jeremy's experience and palate with high regard, yet the bottle we drank last night was quite different than what he recently described. I found this bubbly a bit taut, with a cool bitter nut note in the finish, along with a lemon quality. Refreshing, seemingly lean and with my own preference for low dosage cuvees, this was right in that zone of taste for me. Easy to drink this with a chill and get lost in the taste, which was terrific.

Moderate yellow with slight gold hue; very dry, mineral, but more earth and rocky than chalky/seashell; just a bit austere but with delicious yeastiness and apple skin, good concentration and breed. Needs time. At Okumura Sushi, but was too lean for this style of buttery sauced carpaccio. The Dassai 23 was pure and buttery and worked much better. Save the Low dosage champers for clean minerally sashimi/shellfish and like.

I was a bit disappointed by this wine. I had actually thought this was a 1999 vintage. Told the people at the party we went to that we didn't want to open this unless we ran out of champagne. I brought 2 other bottles more aged. Of course the popped the cork on this about 5 minutes later.
Well I guess notice egged than the present.
Structurally sound. Serious acids and mineral but the smells and flavors were stuck on the citrus side with key lime in particular and a touch of grapefruit juice with pith. Long line finish but almost giving you heartburn and striping the tooth enamels. Like a very young Taittinger CdC but without the finesse.
I doubt I will be buying any more Pommery no matter what the cuvée. Ether stuff available for that price range.

Mostly Blind dinner - 88 Krug, 02 Boillot Monty, 02 Laurent CdB, 89 Palmer, 96 Yquem and etc. (Black Salt, Washington DC): Oh boy this is dry. My guess is a grower’s champagne with 0 dosage. The overall fruit expression reminds me the 02 Dom in some ways. Fresh nose displaying white fruits, apple, a hint of pear, lemon curd, white flowers and mineral. Very good concentration, fresh fruit driven palate impression, slightly coarse mousse, strong presence of mineral, bright acidity and bone dry finish. The finish is extremely dry and gives a bit of bitter impression. Really fresh and darn dry. Need a few more years of cellaring to soften but already very enjoyable.

Providence: Fantastic aromatic nose of biscuit and sourdough with a little lemon blossom and ample mineral notes; This was clean, vibrant, and compacted with intense clean rocks and almost aluminium/metallic minerality. Nice crisp acidity and good complexity. Creamy and smooth but it's got a bit of a soapy finish which keeps this from competing with the best houses. They've got to step this up if they want the reputation of the house to improve.

Xavier Auerbach gave the definitive description, so I quote him (with all due respect): [medium color], very fine bead; elegant nose of considerable finesse, ripe Chardonnay fruit, mineral and floral, hint of custard, toasty depth; the relatively broad but stylish palate...red apple and peach, a seamless structure and impeccable balance...very good length.

A private lunch (Restaurant Le Parc **, Hotel Les Crayeres, Reims, France): Relatively light but intense colour, very fine bead; elegant nose of considerable finesse, ripe Chardonnay fruit, mineral and floral, hint of custard, toasty depth; the relatively broad but stylish palate displays its 2002-power, with fruit of red apple and peach, a seamless structure and impeccable balance, subtle touch of tropical fruit; very good length.

Classic middle-of-the-road Champagne nose. Open and fresh. Citrus and yellow apples. Touch of roasted nuts. Hints of wet stone and perfume. But all very sublime and gentle. A bit too gentle? Medium-fullish body. Good acid backbone. Also creamy, nutty, slightly roasted. Good balance. Slightly bitter finish. More to the elegant than the powerful side. Tasted blind this was hard to guess. A weaker Pol Roger vintage? A bit anonymous and maybe too expensive. In need of further cellaring?

I picked up a few of these and wanted to try. Very different than the previous two wines. This wine is more of a lighter, elegant style. Minerals, apples and great length. Not a wine to put away for decades, but delicious now imo. I'm happy that i purchased and may pick up a few more.

Tasted blind. On the positive side, it's really chalky, so much so that it has an almost minty, cooling effect. On the negative side, it has fairly low acidity, present alcohol, and a disturbing bitterness on the finish. The feel is somewhat manufactured, most likely chaptalized, from less than great fruit. Not really moreish and too expensive for what it is.

Birthday party for a 68 (Stockholm): Tasted blind, lots of red apples and chalk, appeared to be pinot-dominated, equally broad and structured, good if not great.

96 Points.

Slightly oxidized bottle. This is a champagne with generous ripe red apples atop a panna cotta dessert on the nose and lemon honey is carried in on bright grapefruit juice acidity on the palate. Yeast/toastiness didn't fully come out in the bottle we had.

drank it way too fast as with time it improved so much.

Appearance: Golden with fine bubbles
Nose: Yeast, saline, brioche and hint of apple blossom.
Palate: Creamy pear, Meyers Lemon, seashell and toast with minerality and a nice mousse-feel going down. Drinking quite well!
Other notes: I think this wine just keeps getting better and better....not sure if it is bottle evolution, the vintage or bottle variation....I suspect a combination of the first two though. A solid 94 and no hurry too open, but won't be disappointed if you do (assuming this is a representative bottle).

Enjoyed this a lot. 92-93 now with clear upside.

Wish it had a bit more acidity and a bit more "fresh" taste.
EDITORIAL - NOW HAS MORE ACIDITY. Drinking nice almond, brioche, buttery taste with a mouth filling tiny warming bubbles, still some lemon, apples, pears, and some pineapple but just not in enough amounts -EDITORIAL - A BIT MORE LEMON, APPLES PEAR AND PINEAPPLE -A BUMP FOR ME. I have a few more and will finish them up fairly soon. I just don't remember acidity and fruit coming back in anything I've ever had before. Please correct me or let me know if I could expect it to come around. EDITORIAL STILL A BIT CONCERNED ABOUT THE BUBBLES. Will finish my last two bottles fairly soon.

Another champagne that impressed on the palate more than the bouquet. Nearly still, this bottle had nearly lost all its fizz. Showing a creamy texture with an epic finish. Needs just a bit more pizzazz. Very nice.

Yellowish green.

Much better than short after release, but still way to young. This is one of the least developed 02 champagnes I know. I definitely will wait a couple of years to try the next bottle. I hope this will have a boost.

Very elegant wine, I think it will stay many years in this condition, comparable to a young Cristal, but I was missing a little bit the concentration of a really big champagne, very balanced, not so mighty in nose and palate as the most 02's, 92-93

Very floral nose of 7 Up, lots of lemon/lime, touch of minerals, and citrus, same on the palate, young-needs 3 more years to peak, crisp, bright, fresh, very tasty, rich fruit, medium/big body, medium/long finish, finish is the weakest feature, should improve as it ages.

Quite young, but I do not find it hard to drink at the present time (I don't generally have a hard time drinking young champagnes with very high acidity, but I don't think this is among the most acidic I can remember drinking).
Smooth, elegant and fairly light-bodied.
Still very pleasant 24h after opening.

Tasted blind. On the positive side, it's really chalky, so much so that it has an almost minty, cooling effect. On the negative side, it has fairly low acidity, present alcohol, and a disturbing bitterness on the finish. The feel is somewhat manufactured, most likely chaptalized, from less than great fruit. Not really moreish and too expensive for what it is.
