Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2020 Emrich-Schönleber Riesling "Mineral" trocken 88 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Hyper-acidic. Fresh, with the candied fruit and green herbs thing that super young riesling carries. I've only tasted a few riesling barrel samples but this wasn't far off -- that enamel-stripping acidity is there in spades. To be fair, this actually has some really nice flavours and complexity to it, but the acidity is amped too far.

  • NV Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Laid in chalk cellars in 2013; disgorged in 2018. This bottle didn't really do it for me. Somewhat dominated by sweetness, as if the dosage wasn't done quite right. A little doughy with some green apples. It's nowhere near the level of the Blanc de Millenaires, and perhaps more relevant the Brut Reserve either. Somehow the sweetness and the chardonnay don't mesh together well.

  • 2014 Hubert Lamy Bourgogne Blanc Les Chataigners 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

As much a fan as I am of Lamy, this was a relatively weak showing. Has some of the Lamy style; not particularly reduced but with a hint of oakiness. The palate is pretty dilute, but there are some odd flavours here -- iodine and a bit of greenness among them. High acid and thin. Gets the job done but no more than that.

  • 2005 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

It's a strange mix, this vintage and the Jouan style. This has more of a black fruit character as well as a little bit of brown spice. Tannins still show on the finish, and this has some of the same rusticity as other Jouans I've had in that the fruit is a little muddled. A touch of spice as well.
