France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Capsule closure. Yikes. Worryingly advanced. A bit of browned apple and some cider notes on the palate. Drinkable, but there was better stuff on the table.
Solid stuff (not literally). Textbook Boillot with a hint of reduction and plenty of oak (that's mercifully not astringent). Very rich in texture with plenty of good fruit and a breadth on the palate. Lovely acidity to boot; not too complex on the palate, but an amply delicious bottle of Meursault.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Very minute hint of reduction on the nose, but overall a good amount of weight in this wine from the fruit. The oak seems to dominate a little bit, and the precision of Puligny seems to be lost because of it. I think it drinks honestly of the vintage with its generous fruit, but I think the oak treatment is a little too much here.
A super clean bottle of Tempier. Yes, there's still a little bit of dirt because it is, after all, Tempier, but this is a bottle that highlights the fruit and herbs far more than any off flavours. The fruit is still fresh, with a bit of sweetness and a lovely perfumed element. Silky tannins that are fully resolved. A brilliant bottle.
A wine where the nose far outclasses the palate. I love the nose -- it's truly perfumed with some dried floral notes, some pyrazine in the background, as well as some red fruit. On the palate, this is fully resolved -- likely on the back end of the plateau before declining. It's a very light wine, with tannins that are purely silk at this point (though they got a little more prominent with air). Quite a bit of acidity as well. Light on its feet. I've seldom been impressed by Mouton, but for such a bad vintage, this is certainly an overachiever.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Probably the best bottle of this that I've had so far. Ripe (but not overripe) fruit on the nose; more red than black, but amply sweet. We're talking sweet red plums kind of deal, not cherries or other berries. Opulent and luscious, this is a very large-scaled wine on the palate, with good acidity and some sweetness from the fruit. Moderately earthy and funky (as all CdP is), but more clean than not and readily drinkable. I think the tannins still have some ways to go towards softening, but this is a fantastic bottle of wine (and of course, one of the few CdPs I bother with at all).
Wow. Liquid apple pie, down to the slightly crispy texture of the apples and the little bits of cinnamon. Unmistakable and absolutely delicious. A piece of roast pork next to this would be incredible...
