Introduction

Joined the group for a single session in exchange for some sherry rarities

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

Excellent assortment from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Sherry is astounding.
Missed several wines off the tasting list because I already tasted them on Sunday as D5 prep.

  • NV La Cigarrera Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda

    A: Pale gold
N: Medium (+) hazelnut (roasted), salted lemons, hay
P: Dry, low acid, low alcohol, medium (-) body, medium intensity, medium finish
C: Balance of freshness to concentration. The intensity and finish of this rather simple palate gave way to a good quality wine.
    Not suitable for ageing

  • NV Equipo Navazos La Bota de Fino 85 "que va para Amontillado"

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

a fino prior to being shipped off for oxidative treatment and conversion into Amontillado. What a treat!?!

    A: Pale amber
N: Medium nose of bruised yellow apple, caramel, lemon pith, acetaldehyde,
P: Dry, medium (-) acid, low alcohol, medium (-) body, m medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish
C: Balanced freshness to fruit concentration. Though the descriptors are not innumerable and therefore the wine not complex, they carry through with good intensity to a fine finish. This is a very good quality wine.
    Not suitable for ageing

Hard to think why anyone would reject this wine as a fino on its own merits. Generally fino with more texture and flavor is rerouted to an amontillado solera. Its really rather good.

  • NV Valdespino Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palo Cortado Viejo C.P.

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

    A: Medium amber
N: Orange zest, lemon, beautiful languid caramel, walnuts, dates, espresso and leather
P: Dry,medium acid, high alcohol, medium (+) intensity and long finish
C: concentration and freshness in balance. Perfect length carries this somewhat complex set of fairly intensive flavors to an outstanding quality wine.
Perfect balance of citrus and rancio (nuts/leather/wood polish) flavors. Its nicely done.

  • NV Pérez Barquero Montilla-Moriles Gran Barquero PX

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

    A: Deep brown
N: Pronounced nose of figs, dates, syrup, toffee, molasses, prunes, raisins, gingerbread and tar
P: Sweet, medium acid, low alcohol (16%), full body, pronounced intensity, long finish
C: Balanced concentration to acid...preferred this balance to the ElMaestro PX. I luxuriated in the perfect concentration and finish. Little complexity here, however.

  • NV César Florido Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Cream Cruz del Mar

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

    A: Medium amber
N: Medium (+) nose of quince paste, smoke, tobacco , honey, DARK SEMISWEET CHOCOLATE
P: Sweet, medium(-) acid, medium alcohol, pronounced intensity, full body, long finish
C: Fresh balances the sweet!! Ideal intensity and length with the start of complexity. This is very good quality. More complexity would push the quality up. Ive not had a Cream sherry of this class before. I'm floored. I would love to try a VORS Cream in the future.
    Not suitable for ageing.

  • 2018 Jorge Ordoñez & Co. Málaga #2 Victoria

    Spain, Andalucía, Málaga

    A: Pale lemon
N: Pronounced nose of orange blossom, lemons, canned peaches, grapes, roses, jasmine,
P: Sweet, medium acid, full body, pronounced intensity, low alcohol (10%) , medium (+) finish
C: Intensity is faultless, good length but I felt the acidity could have been higher to better balance the sugar here. Not complex but that is typical of this style and yes, the wine shows excellent typicity.
    Very good quality.
    Not suitable for ageing.
