Introduction

Beautiful Napa Valley Day, overlooking Phelps Vineyards, each wine paired with a food course, elegant, exciting, expensive wines but worth the experience.

Flight 1 - Joseph Phelps Vineyards 2022 Tasting (6 Notes)

Napa Valley tasting with great food, service, and fabulous wines.

  • 2019 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

At Phelps Customer Appreciation Day. Nose of old charred oak, minerals, and pineapple, same on the palate, needs a year to peak or modest decant to enjoy now, same on the palate, rich fruit, medium/big body, subtle, very tasty, medium/long finish but lingers on the palate and makes you want to enjoy more, at $90 retail no way.

  • 2018 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

At Phelps Customer Appreciation Day. Nose of red cherry, hints of rich fruit and dry earth, same on the palate, simple, medium body, fairly fruit forward, might improve after a year in the cellar, not even mouth filling fruit for $90 retail, medium/long finish.

  • 1983 Joseph Phelps Insignia Auction Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

At Phelps Customer Appreciation Day. From magnum and bottle, nose of black cherry, sour fruit floral note blew off quickly, same on the palate, medium/big body, very tasty, tired-but each fresh pour showed new vigor and rich flavor, tasted 5 times, mouth filling fruit, medium/long finish with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Description states grower fruit used in the blend in addition to estate fruit. Retail $700 and $1450 for magnum. This was not the 1983 Insignia which I remember as interesting, angular fruit, and tannic which took 9 years to mellow in my cellar.

  • 2016 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard 97 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

At Phelps Customer Appreciation Day. From magnum, nose of black forest cake, black berry, kirsch, and a touch of mint, intense floral nose and intense concentration on the palate, same on the palate, needs 4 years in the cellar, and probably merit 100 points, subdued, sublime, and rich tasting, almost elegant, very soft, silky tannins on the midpalate, and long finish. Retail $1440 magnum and $850 bottle.

  • 2019 Joseph Phelps Insignia 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

At Phelps Customer Appreciation Day. Nose of graphite, black berry, and dried forest floor, same on the palate, enjoyed this insignia but served after the Backus tasting which hurt my impression of this pre-release Insignia, almost big body, subtle but lovely fruit, lots of forest floor tasted, needs 5 years in the cellar to peak, medium/long finish, tasted twice. Retail pre-release $330 bottle.
