Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 1985 Château Poujeaux 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc

Medium garnet with browning fading edges, with visible thickness and extraction. Aromas of spur black cherry, chives, and dried hibiscus flowers, some fresh cut grass, and a seemingly dark minerality, that of pencil shavings. Tannins resolved, and medium weight, with tart black cherry and paprika, then pepper, nutmeg, cedar, rose, and tar. Quite a length and pretty complex

  • 1985 Château Calon-Ségur 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Medium garnet with browning fading edges, with visible thickness. Coffee and graphite overtones on the nose, then violets, black cherry, and a touch of cool mint. Completely resolved tannins, and flavours mostly of dried cedar, pencil shavings, brined meat, dark florals, dried grass, then a hint of underripe blackberries. Longish at the back, and complex with waves of cedar, florals, and tar. Nice!

  • 1985 Château Malescot St. Exupéry 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Somewhat pale garnet with browning fading edges. Nose dominated by clove and nutmeg spices, then red florals and fresh cut grass, mushrooms, underripe cassis, and a hint of coffee rub. Somewhat lighter, leaner, and seemingly simple on the attack, with mushrooms, red cherry, cranberry, savoury brine, rose, and dried grass. Medium finish. Seems that this one hadn’t been able to hold its weight well

  • 1985 Château Margaux 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Somewhat pale garnet with browning fading edges. Overtones of mint, herbs, and dried grass on the nose, then dark florals, pepper, a Chinese treebark herbal feel, and there seems to be a black fruited, plummy hint. Flavours seem to be Chinese herbs dominated, then dark florals, underripe blackberry and cassis, and then the nutmeg and pepper spices, and a seemingly tannic tea-like feel. Medium length
