1988 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. Barrel sample that sported a handwritten label that said drawn 10/2/1990, very young fruit on the nose with lots of barrel sample odors plus a little French barnyard, great cherry fruit on the palate with very young, rich fruit, well balanced, long finish and great cabernet flavors, not unlike the 1985 Chateau Montelena barrel sample of 3 years ago. My #1.

1978 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Grace Family Vineyard 93 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. Aged over 2 years in Limousin oak barrels, made at Caymus, lots of sediment coated the bottle, it had a wonderful California cabernet nose with hints of rich fruit, followed by wonderful cabernet flavor in the mouth with rich, medium body, forward, old and mature cherry fruit, well balanced wine but too much soft tannin left during the finish and aftertaste, distinctive cabernet style. My #3.

1980 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Grace Family Vineyard 93 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. Went 3.5 years in limousine Oak barrels, it seemed to be a younger wine on the nose than the previous 1978 and 1979, good bottle bouquet on the nose and showed rich, concentrated fruit in the mouth, should peak in 5 years, lots of medium, soft tannins that coat the mouth during the finish. My #3 Tied.

1982 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Grace Family Vineyard 93 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. The same Grace label as the earlier vintages, nose of rich fruit, coupled with much younger bottle bouquet compared to the older vintages, tasted like rich, black cherries, well balanced and structured with good acid and soft tannins coated the mouth, suggesting ageing of 5 more years. My #3 tied.

1979 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Grace Family Vineyard 91 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. 3 years in Limousin oak, lacked the bottle sediment of the 1978, some bottle bouquet on the nose but tasted very well balanced with lots of rich, concentrated extract plus high acid and lots of tannin coating the mouth imply this wine needs more ageing, about 3 years, long finish. My #5.

1978 Cassayre-Forni Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

10 Cabernets Tasted at Primas with John Shafer. Showed rich fruit on the nose and a brilliant red color in the glass, a good, musty, old cabernet with varietal flavors in the mouth coupled with medium, soft tannins and medium signs of acid suggested a well balanced wine with 2 years to its peak, long, pleasant finish and aftertaste without the big tannins on the finish most of the wines had. My #1 and Group #3.

1983 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. this was the first vintage with the Dick Grace label, 3.5 years in Limousin Oak barrels, typical Grace nose, rich fruit and terrific bottle bouquet plus hints of more wood than the older wines, concentrated medium fruit plus lots of mouth coating tannins in the mouth, finish is long but average flavors when compared to the other wines tonight. My #6.

1981 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Grace Family Vineyard 86 Points

Tasting of 7 Grace Family Cabernet Sauvignons. Label showed 3.5 years in limousine Oak barrels, the nose showed a lighter but rich extract with good bottle bouquet, medium cabernet fruit in the mouth coupled with medium soft tannins, and lacks the complex flavors found in the previous wines. My #7.
