Flight 1 - Veneto Region - Soave, Pinot Grigio (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Lamberti Soave Classico 83 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico

Pale lemon in colour, the aromas are slightly neutral but with time show nettle, bandage and green apple. Not that intense; the entry is tight with fresh fruits, and a chalky mid-palate texture. Pleasant and approachable with a gentle almond, the acidity is crisp and slightly green.

  • 2008 Lamberti Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie Santepietre 84 Points

    Italy, Delle Venezie

Light to mid yellow; the nose delivers a sharp lemon and sherbet aroma.
The entry is medium weighted with some breadth to suggest Pinot Grigio, a chalky, sinewy texture, crisp refreshing acidity and decent finish. Bright and fresh.

  • 2008 Ermacora Friuli Colli Orientali Pinot Grigio 85 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Friuli Colli Orientali

Partridge eye pink with a grey hue suggesting Pinot Gris.
Fresh and intense aromas of lemon zest, strawberry, Forelle pear with a green melon and grapy notes.
A zingy acid entry with soft, broad mid-palate, light and airy with more strawberry, creaminess and slightly oily finish. Mid-length and easy drinking.

Flight 2 - Veneto - Valpolicella in 3 forms (3 Notes)

  • 2000 Trabucchi d'Illasi Valpolicella Superiore Terre del Cereolo 84 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore

Medium garnet with a wid-ish orange rim. Aromas of rose, tar, blackberry jam and truffle - some raw meat also linger. The entry is sweet and jammy but contrasts with vibrant acidity and firm tannins. Fairly solid and rather simple, a balsamic, volatile element rises towards the finish. Mid-length. To be drunk up.

  • 2003 Folonari Ripasso della Valpolicella 89 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella

Light garnet wide orange rim. Bouquet shows milk chocolate, ripe dark fruits along with some sour cherry. Fresh on entry, the wine has lively acidity and lovely grippy tannins, with a sweetness to ther fruit. There is a soft wooded spice note but seems older wood. More in keeping with Barbera with its acid than Valpolicella but the finish has some extract becoming more gritty. Good depth of fruit and complex. Very enjoyable.

  • 2004 Lamberti Amarone della Valpolicella Tenuta Pule 85 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

14.5% alcohol; Deep ruby in colour with a pink rim the bouquet seems evolved and displays truffles, melted tar, hung game and Marmite.
Full-bodied, the wine has depth and intensity without the concentration and for 14l5% isn't that rich, coming across as stringy and lacking material, density and mass. Dry, firm exit but it seems disappointing for Amarone Della Valpolicella.

  • 2005 Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Intense nose of black raspberry, Bing cherry and violet aromas with a hint of spice. A soft entry rises as the tannins take hold and give structure whilst the lively acid supports. An elegant wine, there is flesh to the core, and it finishes firm. Reasonably complex with a medium to long finish.

  • 1998 Ca' Bianca Barolo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Tawny core graduating to a wide browning rim. The bouquet is gently perfumed with tar, pencil shavings and mineral.
A reasonably intense entry, the wine is deep and sweet with fresh acidity and some mineral to push it forward. Still showing nicely, there is a hint of stewed plums, dark chocolate and marinated cherries. Powdery tannins with a long finish. Fab!

  • 2003 Gaja Barbaresco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Garnet core to a mahogany rim colour; the aroma is intense and distinct with graphite, melted tar, pencil shavings, truffle and liquorice. A richly textured, ripe entry with sweet fruit, medium-bodied with fabulous fine-grained tannins that pull on the gums balanced to give structure and a solid framework enhanced by lively acidity. Very complex already, the wine shows a fantastic depth of flavour, in-built perfume and layers of sumptuous fruit, all in that athletic feminine style. A long persistent finish.
