Introduction

It was a pleasure to meet Jean-Nicolas Meo of Domaine Meo Camuzet at a recent masterclass in NY. These are highly concentrated and quite opulent which works for me but may not appeal to everyone. Jean-Nicolas confirmed that he started experimenting with cluster inclusion, so it will be interesting to follow the style over the next few years. WOTD was the '15 Brûlées which epitomises Vosne Romanee's iron fist in a velvet glove with second-place to the '19 Villages Vosne.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2020 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

The first wine of the tasting, from their negotiant arm. I initially wasn't that impressed but the wine grew on me and it became concentrated and impressive over time. Deep dark raspberry nose. Fruit forward and peppery, almost like a Rhone wine. Chalky. Syrah-like. Tastes nothing like how I know Chambolle Musigny but a very well made wine that will improve in a few years. 91-92

  • 2020 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

The nose was quite closed but the palate is open and expressive. Dark sweet fruit. Quite opulent and nice tension. Slight chocolate and autumnal notes. A bit young and scoring conservatively 92+?

  • 2019 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

This was the best wine of the 2019-2020 flight in my opinion and beat the GC Corton and 1er Chambolle. Uber perfumed nose. Lush and balanced but light on its feet - true Vosne iron fist in a velvet glove. Surprisingly long finish for a young Villages wine, 92-93

  • 2015 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

This was hard to taste. Somewhat open nose but almost completely closed palate. At least my glass was. Jean-Nicolas mentioned that the '15 vintage is generally shut down at the moment with the '17 to '18 most promising for early drinking. Score withheld.

  • 2015 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

The best wine of the tasting, or at least the most developed given that it was mostly '19 to '20 vintages that were tasted. Very expressive campfire and smoke nose. Medium dark raspberry palate. More open than the '15 Chaumes that preceded it. Still, this Brûlées is quite tightly wound and would be better with another few years. 94

  • 2018 Domaine Nicolas-Jay Pinot Noir L'Ensemble 89 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

It was nice to taste the Neo Camuzet JV in Oregon as the finale of the tasting. Candy nose and sarsaparilla palate. Still young. Jean-Nicolas mentioned this is fully de-stemmed and close in style to their Burgundian wines, and you can get a sense of the Meo opulence in this cool-climate Willamette that was fun to drink. 89+
