Flight 1 - Pre-dinner delight (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Opening proceedings (1 Note)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Collection 241 91 Points

    France, Champagne

En magnum. Slightly sweet whiff on the nose with elderflower and white fruit with the tell tale Roederer toast which is nicely done as ever. Seemed slightly short on the midpalate but decent all the same. From Zalto Champagne.

Flight 3 - Younger reds (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Château Gazin Pomerol 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Crimson in colour. An opulent nose showing plums and well judged oak. Medium to full bodied with velvety tannins and real lift and freshness on the midpalate where there is delicious blue fruit in spades with perhaps a bit of chocolate. I continue to really like this wine. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 2010 Château La Conseillante 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A real treat to try this Chateau for the first time and in a top vintage. Crimson with a little evolution in appearance, and with blue and black fruits on the nose. Medium to full bodied with silky yet comforting tannins and arrow like precision with serious concentration and scale fanning out on the finish. Whilst early window, this was not too soon to drink now, and really had so much class and pedigree without needing to make a big statement. Lovely. Group WOTN and upon reflection it should probably have been mine too, although I put it 2nd. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 2009 Château du Domaine de L'Eglise 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Quite dark crimson. Ripe vintage yet the nose came over as slightly duller and certainly on the blue / black fruit. Medium bodied with supple tannins and juicy dark purple fruit and good freshness. By itself over dinner this would be thoroughly satisfying but it should really be better than it is, given the prime terroir from where it originates. From Zalto Bordeaux.

Flight 4 - Some bottle age (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Château La Fleur-Pétrus 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Dark crimson in colour. Opulent nose showing red and blue fruit and a whiff of Turkish bazaar. Full bodied with velvety tannins and showing a darker fruit profile. There's serious midpalate persistence and energy and possibly came over as a bit too full throttle for me - although most in the room absolutely loved it. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 2006 Château La Conseillante 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Slightly more evolution and redder in colour. Forest floor with some truffle and slightly decaying dark red / blue fruit. Medium bodied with silky tannins and nice fresh acidity and persistence. It is no doubt a classy wine and seems to speak of its place, but it lacks the scale and majesty of the 2010, yet it is no doubt really good and a treat to try. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 2004 Clos l'Église (Pomerol) 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Quite dark in colour, a little muted although there were red and black fruits on the nose. Medium bodied and with fine tannins except it seemed a bit lactic and creamy with even some green notes. Not a resounding success when assessed in the context of some truly great wines from the appellation. From Zalto Bordeaux

  • 2004 Château L'Eglise-Clinet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Crimson, however it appears quite evolved as possibly a little browning around the edges. One of my fellow diners suggested it might be a bit oxidative. I am not sure what, but the wine really did not stand out and seemed quite ordinary, and a bit "old winey", rather below the standards that one would expect from a first rate producer. From Zalto Bordeaux.

Flight 5 - Mature reds (3 Notes)

  • 2001 Château L'Evangile 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Mainly crimson in colour. Exotic nose mainly on the blue and red fruit but also with some tobacco and old library. Medium to full bodied with fine velvety tannins, red fruited showing good freshness whilst retaining decent concentration and coherent balance. There's a certain je ne sais quo "x factor" to this wine which I find hard to articulate. My third favourite WOTN in a great cast. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 1996 Vieux Château Certan 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon according to Wine Searcher.

This wine was well into its tertiary window and had lovely balance and restraint with bright fruit and well judged acidity. Medium bodied with silky tannins and oodles of charm. Despite scoring this lower than others, it was my favourite wine of the night, rather than "the best". From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 1998 Vieux Château Certan 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Crimson. Nose reveals red and purple fruits ,with opulent perfume. Medium to full bodied with fine tannins, red fruit and considerably more power than the 96, although it does feel a tiny bit spikey (to me at least), perhaps through heavier oak treatment. May benefit from even longer cellaring. From Zalto Bordeaux

Flight 6 - Bonus to finish (1 Note)

  • 1995 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 91 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

An unscheduled Auslese to perfectly bookend a decadent Pomerol themed dinner, thanks Nick.

Orange in colour and whilst there are alluring aromatics ( whiff of super unleaded meets seville orange - in a balanced and good way!), nothing prepares one for the narcotic experience on the mid-palate. It's full bodied, viscous, fresh, there's serious concentration, huge scale and persistence showing through in textural layers that cascade, on and on. It's sweet but its savoury and the is a complex citrus dance that tantalises and teases. Bravo. Not officially in the vote for WOTN fortunately for those preceding. A real treat unlikely to be revisited. From Zalto.
