Introduction

This was the regular OG wine lunch. I had special dispensation to attend today. We had a great group of seven out on the patio at Ciao Bella on a gorgeous 80+ degree day (CV, DM, TS, JV, DD, LS, KB). Super way to kick off Spring.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • NV Andre Tixier & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Carte d'Or 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Dried apricot on the nose, with lemon peel, oxidative, rather tart lemon and grapefruit on the palate, sour citrus and citrus zest. Prefer the nose over the palate.

  • 2002 Pommery Champagne Cuvée Louise Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This showed very well today, and really has been pretty dang consistent over the years. The nose is outstanding, filled with toast, dulce de leche, earth and seashore, roasted nuts, and pear. The palate is is creamy, nutty, freshly torn croissant, ducle de leche, brine, pear, ocean, long finish. Delicious. 93+ to 94pts.

  • 2004 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. This bottle was firing on all cylinders and was back to that sublime category. I could just sit and take in the nose all day long. Wafting with toasted almonds, oyster shell, cedar shavings, brioche, pear, spice and sea breeze. The palate follows through in spades with great lift, energy and persistence. Simply glorious.

  • 2009 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cascina Francia 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium dark red plus color with a 6mm transition. Decanted for about 2 hours. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Lovely nose, dried strawberry, rose petals, dried herbs, fresh, red berries, dusty, hints of anise. The palate shows firm but plush tannins, medium weight, strawberry, cherry, dried wood, anise, good depth and length. Just a baby, but starting to strut its stuff.
