Flight 1 - Champagne (2 Notes)

  • 1983 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 88 Points

    France, Champagne

Dark yellow bordering on orange in colour. Oxidative umami and orange rind on the nose. Not v bubbly at all, in fact became quite flat, although perfectly quaffable and good midpalate persistence. A real treat to try, but not one to seek out. From Zalto Universal.

  • NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

2020 Disgorgement. Red apple peel and strawberry on the nose and slightly muted Egly brioche notes which carry through on to the palate. Medium bodied with good persistence and length and a vinousy fruitiness. A treat to try, although I personally wouldn't seek it out - yet it might be more interesting with further bottle age. From Zalto Universal.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis 1er Cru La Forest 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Initially smoke and oak signature seemed quite overbearing at first which distracted one into thinking that this was more about winemaking than terroir. After the most exaggerated aspects blew off, this medium to full bodied wine (which had a lovely textural weight) revealed steel and oyster shells with considerable concentration and power. Should drink well for another couple of decades. From Zalto Montrachet.

  • 2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Colour was light yellow with more of a green tinge to it than the Dauvissat enjoyed alongside it. Initially the nose showed reduction and it was difficult to enjoy with underlying white and yellow fruits. I left the glass alone for 30 mins + and the wine really transformed, and better still after 1 hour / 1 hour 30 mins plus. Medium to full bodied, not particularly fruity, more minerally, yet there is power and concentration and mouth watering salinity and a never ending finish. The first PYCM that I have truly loved rather than admired or respected. From Zalto Montrachet.

Flight 3 - Margaux and trespasser (3 Notes)

  • 1983 Château Palmer 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Crimson and showing some age as one would expect. Nose reveals old books, varnish and savoury raspberry. Medium bodied with silky powdery tannins leading the way to slightly decaying red fruits and tobacco notes on the midpalate. Quite savoury and masculine compared to the 83 Margaux. It's not trying to please, and all the better for it. My favourite red of an unreal line up, a real treat to try. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 1983 Château Margaux 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Crimson and correct for an 83. Nose takes a bit of coaxing and reveals perfumed aromas of violets and pot pourri. Medium bodied with luxury silky tannins and yet more violets, pot pourri and other exotic spices and red fruits on the midpalate. Exquisitely balanced and very finely poised, yet ultimately not really my cup of tea, as I would have preferred a more savoury profile. A huge treat to try and from Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 1983 Château La Lagune 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Crimson and correct in colour for an 83. Books, leather and dried fruits on the nose. Medium bodied with fine tannins and feels nicely evolved with decaying red fruits, tobacco and more leather on the midpalate. Really well balanced. Drank alongside 83s from Palmer, Margaux and LLC and deserved its place, even if it had to blag its way in! From Zalto Bordeaux.

Flight 4 - More aged red Bordeaux (2 Notes)

  • 1983 Château Léoville Las Cases 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Colour looks more like a 2009 than a 1983 very vibrant crimson. Very perfumed nose that screamed blue fruits and violets. Medium to full bodied and not shy at all with velvety tannins and huge scale on the midpalate where there are blue fruits and other spices. Youthful and from a seemingly perfect bottle. From Zalto Bordeaux.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Poyferré 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Crimson and appears correct for a 1990. Cassis and blue fruits on the palate with very fine tannins and lively acids giving way to an interplay of red and blue fruits on the midpalate whilst remaining savoury. Feels quite young and a real treat to try. From Zalto Bordeaux.

Flight 5 - Dessert wine (1 Note)

  • 1983 Château d'Yquem

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

I could only experience this for about 5 minutes because I had to run to catch a train, due to slow service. Anyway this seemed musty and underwhelming and did not really show any greatness as I would expect of d'Yquem. However I understand that those who could drink and follow the wine were able to see it transform.
