20 Top Wines of the 1983 Vintage: Champagne Showdown: All three bottles showed better than expected. Dom Perignon wins with 97pts - a symphony of stature, purity, and layered complexity. Its vibrant mix of fresh citrus and fruit elegantly intertwines with mature notes of burnt sugar and honey, all supported by a vivid acid line and a mineral backbone adding extra dimension. This DP is poised for further evolution over the next decade. Comtes de Champagne, at 95pts, impresses with its signature blend of brioche and butter, harmonizing with both fresh and baked fruit nuances, despite a bouquet tinged with cardboard hints. Cristal, scoring 93pts, initially reveals its age through oxidation, yet remarkably rejuvenates with air, gaining freshness, depth, and a captivating saline spine.
Decanting: Good from the go. No extensive decanting needed but a bit of air improved the experience.

1983 vintage horizontal with >20 wines, mostly from Bordeaux. Key observations: 1/ Acceptable vintage for Champagne with DP over-delivering, 2/ Laville Haut Brion is a masterpiece among the whites, 3/ Bordeaux is going strong at 40 years of age with stand-outs Latour and Margaux. 4/ No need to chase any Napa’s from the vintage, 5/ off-piste Italians kept up impressively with Soldera an undisputed medalist.
Tasting note: An evolved yet magistral nose of burned sugar, baked pear fruit and a fine layer of nutty notes. The palate still vibrant fine fresh acidity, amazing perlage and a slightly creamy texture, adding more varied burned sugar aromatics. This develops amazingly with aeration, too, and was an easy winner for me in the flight (vs Cristal ’83, Comtes de Champagne ’83).

Quite a long way past it’s prime. The faintest hiss of CO2 as the cork was released. Not overly oxidized but very very tertiary in flavour. Lots of mushroom, sous bois and nutty aromas. A very interesting experience.

My 40th birthday at 67 Pall Mall (67 Pall Mall): This was always going to be a punt. A bottle of Moet was on standby as I had been informed that if the DP felt too evolved then some at table assemblage with its stable mate could revive the corpse.
In the glass burnished gold colour - there is a hint of fizz for the merest moment before dying down. The noses matches the appearance - nutty but with a little grapefruit peel and sea air - a good start. Pretty enjoyable on the palate, some hazelnut but still has a good grapefruit cut. Good acidity and long finish. Certainly not a stellar champagne any more but a really fun experience

Peter's 1983 extravaganza (67 Pall Mall): Deep burnished gold and barely petillant. That said, the wine was not dead and (for my oxidative-friendly palate) certainly enjoyable. An intense (and only slightly musty) nose with dried fruit and deep caramel, and more energy on the palate, which was grippy and zesty, had some tasty orange fruit and then a lovely fresh finish that was tinged with vanilla. Almost certainly better 10 years ago, but still good.

Peter's 40th (67 Pall Mall, London): Dark yellow bordering on orange in colour. Oxidative umami and orange rind on the nose. Not v bubbly at all, in fact became quite flat, although perfectly quaffable and good midpalate persistence. A real treat to try, but not one to seek out. From Zalto Universal.

Popped and poured. Cork considerably shrunken but intact and not showing any signs of ingress/egress and still good, lively but gentle fizz. Lovely golden, dark amber, almost IRN-bru like hue! Toasty aromas at first and strong presence of walnut aromas as others on here have mentioned. With more time in the glass, toasty aromas took more of a back seat and started to show more precision and elegance, apples, citrus, also some umami notes, though unfortunately the wine was so drinkable that shared over dinner it became impossible to hold any back for more than an hour or two!!
My first experience of a vintage champagne with so much bottle age and one which I'd happily repeat though the chance to open these kind of bottles doesn't exactly come around every day!

EL Birthday Dinner (The Garden Table at Le Pavillon): I am a sucker for 80s Dom. Came out of the bottle a little awkward, but once it settled in the glass it revealed my favorite, honey-roasted almond flavors. Good effervescence for almost 40 years in the bottle. And this was just a p1! Next to the 96 Krug Mesnil it didn't have the energy, but really delicious.

Tasted blind. Dark yellow. For the age, very fresh nose here with grassy elements, apple cider, wood. Crisp palate, with a complex finish of caramel. Another great showing of an aged Dom Perignon.

This is beautiful! Minimal effervescence (a "burp" every 2nd glass!) and moderate gold color. Somewhat muted nose, excellent acidity carrying the abundant grilled lemon/orange citrus palate. No hint of mushroom, earthiness or forest floor often found in old bubbly.

The palate has retained a beautiful energy, with a beautiful velvety substance and iodized aromas, all animated by a fine acidity. The whole is still so young that I begin to doubt the year, blindly I would have put this wine around 1995. The wine rather has a very fine profile, we are far from the power released by some years at Dom Pé but the whole remains coherent and extremely pleasant. The finish is very beautiful, fresh, it explodes on beautiful bitterness giving way to a very salty length. Rare to find this on a champagne.
Excellent.

Another night of celebrating our move into the new house. Again just drinking incredibly well. Poured much lighter than I expected and still had the bubbles. The major indication of age was the foil basically being stuck onto the cork but not the worst. It’s got some secondary notes still and is a lovely champagne. Really enjoyable. I saved some for last sip of the night.

Medium gold with orange amber hues... still quite a bit of effervescence. Nose is really expressive...burnt brulee, orange rind, golden raisin, clove, cinnamon, fire roasted apple, marzipan, almond, clementine, toffee, hazelnut, honey, candied flowers and coffee. This is definitely a drink now...fully mature...but it is really pretty....palate is really quite rich but there is great balancing acid. Finish is long and quite complex

Bottle fill, cork in vg condition. What began a little rough, recovered nicely after the bottle had been open 90 minutes.

A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Raveneau and Chave Vertical (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Slightly more advanced color than the Cristal showing a hint of amber. Initially a hint of toffee and light sherry. Fully mature nose displaying ripe yellow fruit, baked apple, clementine, a hint of red currant, cinnamon, toffee, hazelnut, lanolin, honey and limestone. Fully integrated harmonious palate, sweet and succulent yellow fruit driven palate impression, refined and polished, fine generous mousse, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a medium to long sweet yellow fruit and red currant driven finish with sweet spices at the end. With air, it gets fresher and lighter, starting around 92pts and ending in 95pts.

Hello again old friend... 13 years after having last had this (btw it was amazing then clearly besting a good but then very young freshly released 1995), it's my birth year, so maybe a bit biased? No. This really is classy. PRESTINE bottle: very high fill, label as new, in gift box. The cork went with an umph - ferocious for its age. Clearly great condition bottle! Drank fantastic out of get go and just kept getting better, hallmark of all great bottles, last sip being the best. It doesn't have the body or deep oxidative but seductive roast hazelnut aromas of the 1982, but it does have more acidity and very fine perlage that was protracted and kept going for half an hour while in the glass. WOTN. Good bye old friend...

Brought to Geoff's birthday. This wine was a lot more developed than the one from the same badge I opened 3 years go on my birthday. Oxidized apple, slight sherry note but enough yeast and fruit to hold its structure. mid+ finish. Enjoyable with different food.

It's alive!

Beautiful gold color. Nose of almond, apricot, vanilla, butterscotch. The cork broke as we opened this but were able to extract it and found this gorgeous fascinating wine. Still a good amount of effervescence, only a hint of oxidation. Nutty, rich, intense and beautifully unusual (oldest champagne we've tried to date).

The bottle had been questionably stored before I got it, so our expectations were fairly low...but wow, it was in fine shape! Some stickiness around the capsule and cage--but the fill was still excellent (above the base of the neck). Cork popped when opened, and it still had plenty of fine bubbles.
Initially very mushroomy and funky on the nose, it eventually blew off and evolved into more nutty aromas. Dark, golden honey body with lots of orange marmalade, some almond, and smooth, fine bubbles. Lingering finish with balanced acidity.
It took a few minutes to really start opening up, but then seemed to fade within about an hour.

A perhaps odd pairing of 1983 DP and 1996 Bollinger RD. Opening the 1983, it fizzed nicely and on pouring was an autumnal brown. The nose was flat but on the mouth it still showed some citrus and a touch of apple. Over the next half hour or so it developed further and was holding its own against the Bollinger.

A citrus nice nose, quite aromatic and yet subtle. A pleasant color. Golden with tiny bubbles. In the mouth, the wine is delicate and a bit short in my view. Drank side by side with a 1990 which offered more body, depth and complexity. Still, the girls seem to prefer the 1983

Acquired at Sothebys as part of a mixed lot and drunk on Christmas Day. Worryingly little fizz on popping the cork, but no problems in the glass, deep golden color, fine bubbles, a beautiful nose of pear and toffee. Marvelous tastes of coffee, toffee, a little marzipan. Doesn't linger profoundly on the palate, but beautifully mature and graceful. Wish I had more.

Winestreet Does 2004 Jadot (Kozlak's, North Oaks, MN): A bonus bottle provided by Brad Weiss of Winestreet. I didn't take great notes on this. It came off as tired and a touch oxidized, and I was a bit underwhelmed. Judgment reserved, since my palate was undoubtedly thrown off by the 2003 Yquem, tasted side-by-side (see TN).

Winestreet Tastes Jadot: Popped and poured by Brad Weiss at Winestreet to keep the party rolling and very much appreciated. It was a thrill for me to taste such an old champagne, and I liked it a lot. The nose is expressive with orange peel, dough, lemon, mineral, and lots more. The taste was a surprisingly blend of cigar ash and smoke. This was extremely light on the palate but had decent flavor. Fascinating.

Wine-pages.com London Champagne Off-Line (Alba Restaurant, Whitecross Street): Almost a coppery gold colour – incredibly different to the 96. Is the difference really down to just the 13 years of extra age? Remarkable toffee fudge nose. Full and a touch caramelly with cocoa butter notes. Although I've not had DP before tonight, I'd hazard that this wasn't a terribly good bottle. At least I'd hope that was the case. Good/Very Good.

Brought to Geoff's birthday. This wine was a lot more developed than the one from the same badge I opened 3 years go on my birthday. Oxidized apple, slight sherry note but enough yeast and fruit to hold its structure. mid+ finish. Enjoyable with different food.

It's alive!
Men leverer varene allikevel.
Konsentrert, fullmoden og spennende.
Holder linjen og ettersmaken sitter lenge.
En veldig morsom flaske å smake.

This bottle was unfortunately in a state of decline. Still great body, flavors but the nose a little musty and after about thirty minutes started open started heading further south.

Some pop on opening and fine bubbles. Amber to gold in colour. Honey, toffee and some peach and apricot fruit to the nose. Clean and long finish. Surprisingly good!

Wonderful drinking Sunday upon return from Wine Country.
Golden colored with very tiny bubbles.
Tastes and aroma of almonds, carmel, honey ... Really enjoyable to drink!

Surprisingly youthful for a wine almost 30 years old. Hint of oxidation, but only a hint. Darker color. Apple, bready dough, orange peel and the beginnings of secondary notes. Nice fine bubbles with solid finish.

NIce and smooth champagne. Delicate. Hints of vanilla, green apples and I felt a bit of nuts on the back. Very enjoyable. 2 Bottles left!

Had this next to a bottle of moon aieul 06. Did not show it's age at all, cream, fresh, but with good body. Still much fizz in the champagne though not pop on the open. Light orange in color, a crowd pleaser!

Väldigt mörk i färgen.

With more than 20 years of bottle age, this is now a beautiful Champagne. Classic nose with caramel, iron rust, oxidized pear, honey and marmalade. Color is now golden. Still plenty of bubbles left but a lot smoother.

Golden, slightly oxidized; bubbles numerous, fine and slow, but not persistent; mushroomy, yeasty, bruised apples; rich, robust, long, complex, thoroughly wonderful. Cork had deteriorated, but had not unduly affected the wine.
