Introduction

Lovely to get an invite to the First Wednesday club after missing a month whilst I was overseas...

Flight 1 (17 Notes)

    "Served Blind.
A little sulphur, candy floss, a little green fruit. Sour and sharp, textured burr, a little chalky minerality, a little lemon and green melon, touch of alcohol warmth.
I went with some anonymous Italian varietal 2018 - not a good start"

  • 2018 00 Wines Chardonnay EGW

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    "Served Blind.
Slightly reductive, struck match, early harvest sharp lemon notes but with some alcohol warmth. On the palate it's a touch soft despite the sharp lemon, a little texture, lacks a little freshness.
Initially on the nose I thought it might be Burgundy but Macon where someone had harvested early to preserve acidity but then went to New world with the lack of acidity on the palate. Wasn't sure where though - I knew it wasn't Australia or New Zealand."

  • 2020 Tscharke Grenache Blanc Gnadenfrei White

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa

    "Served Blind.
Slightly reductive sulphur, slightly waxy, nutty, muted fruit is in the stone fruit space but fairly anonymous. Juicy, fleshy, touch of alcohol warmth, a little textured burr, Like the 00 EGW it's a bit flat on the palate.
    I went with Rhone varietal - Marsanne? - Australia - Victoria/South Australia? 2018"

  • 2016 Artazu Navarra Santa Cruz de Artazu

    Spain, Navarra

    "Served Blind.
Super tangy, citrus, a little citric fruit. Fresh, juicy, saline, textured burr. Slightly crunchy.
This was served with the Gnadenfrei as a (blind) matched theme which was, I thought, the Rhone varietal so I went with Marsanne again but this didn't feel French and, as I'm not as knowledgeable as I would like to think I am, I didn't know where else this could be in the New World so I thought it might be from New Zealand...again 2018"

  • 2018 Tyrrell's Shiraz Pinot Noir Special Release

    "Served Blind.
Pretty red berry, blackberry, sweet spice, slightly jubey jammy notes. Juicy with textured burr, slightly jammy notes - red berries; strawberry, touch of alcohol warmth on the finish.
I was in McLaren Vale thinking that this might be a 3-5 year old Grenache or Grenache Shiraz blend."

  • 2018 Château Mercian Syrah Mariko

    "Served Blind.
Slightly dusty spice, berries, slightly jubey with a touch of sour underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, juicy, savoury, red over blackberry, textured burr is slightly drying and a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish.
I thought this might be an alternative Spanish Grenache on quite rocky soil"

  • 2013 Craggy Range Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

Slightly sour black fruits, slight pyrazine, sweet spice, a little jubey jammy notes. Medium plus intensity acidity, talc textured tannic grip is quite drying, woody, chewy, a little black fruit, stony minerality.
This rather stumped me. I thought it might be an Italian Super Tuscan Bordeaux blend from 2015"

  • 2018 Montevetrano Montevetrano Colli di Salerno IGT

Italy, Campania, Colli di Salerno IGT

A little spice, red berries, slightly dusty, a touch of pyrazine. Medium plus intensity acidity , red berry, plenty of tannic grip, lots of oak, alcohol warmth.
This was paired with the Montevetrano Core so, again, I was plumping with Tuscany and young but the pyrazine implied a bit of Cabernet so I was in the Super Tuscan space."

Closing

The new venue must have thrown me completely because I got most of these impressively incorrect. I'm especially ashamed to have no idea what the Clos de l'Oratoire 2010 was after a week of being basically immersed in a bath of Bordeaux.
