Umami Table

Introduction

Seriously impressive meal at Umami Table - even more so when you realise it’s completely a one-man show unlike other private dining places. I always mention that I like simple but well-executed dishes and everything was done just right here.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2019 Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier Am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling Großes Gewächs 88 Points

    Germany, Rheinhessen

Completely dry, dense and ripe, so I guessed 2015 or 2019 Alsace instead of German. Strong petroleum notes on the nose, grapefruit on the palate. As I often find with GGs, too large-scaled and oily for my preference and I couldn’t do more than a glass of this.

  • 2019 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Brought two bottles and embarrassingly mixed them up. At first this was so ripe and round, with a little Chenin-like sweetness that everyone including myself was in Loire. With time the oak-inflected Chardonnay characteristics began to show, almost like a CdB white rather than Chablis. Still needs a lot of time to fully come together.

  • 2017 Maison Valette Pouilly-Fuissé 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé

Very cloudy with a natural, funky nose so my first thought was Jura. Once it was revealed not to be a Jura, was clearly a natural white Burg but I failed to land at Valette when I really should have. A little tropical, some bruised apple and lychee, verging on being unclean, but I liked it for its uniqueness. Rather divisive among others.

  • 2019 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Brézé Clos David 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur

My other contribution. Quite reductive and muted, more Chardonnay-like than the Moreau at first. Very primary and needs more time in the cellar, as it never really opened up.

  • 2021 Massetti Francesco Montepulciano Rosato IGT Colli Aprutini IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Abruzzi, Colli Aprutini IGT

My first instinct was something similar to a Pepe rose. Impressive tannic spine for a rose, but still retained some playfulness. Completely clean, had a nice saline streak and a very good finish. My WOTN.

  • 2017 Radikon Slatnik 91 Points

Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT

Not the biggest fan of skin-contact wines but this was good. High-toned nose but clean as a whistle, some apricot, honey, and olive notes. Despite being the entry-level, this was quite serious in terms of structure. Went well with food.

  • 2016 Clos du Jaugueyron Haut-Médoc 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Got this off the list. Surprisingly green with distinct pyrazine notes that brought some to Loire. Despite its youth, there were no new oak notes at all. Good acidity but the unpleasant streak of white pepper was distracting and reminded me of 2004 red Burgundy.
