Introduction

Our group was hosted by the head wine buyer for Martignelli's Liquors and he featured the wines of Burgundy. As always, the wine was really superb, but I felt the meal was on the heavy side. Some of the wines tasted better on their own rather than paired with the food.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

Flight 2 - White Burgs (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale yellow color. Reticent nose of tart apple and citrus. Palate of tart apple, some lemon, with nice minerality. Very precise. A great wine. Predictably much lighter in character than the Puligny-Montrachet also in the flight. We preferred the Chablis this time though most of the group went in the other direction.

  • 2005 Louis Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Golden color. Nose of white fruits, some butterscotch. Palate of pears, apples, butterscotch, and vanilla. Good density. Good minerality and acidity. Very enjoyable, but this particular day was one more suited to Chablis.

Flight 3 - 3 Flights of Red Burgs (2 Notes)

Paired with creamy seafood crepe.

  • 2005 J.M. Boillot Volnay 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Dark ruby color. Nose of black cherry, some spices. Palate was lush with black/red cherry, spice, some heat. Less earthy than the Pommard. Velvety tannins. Drinking well now and will continue to improve.

  • 2005 Chanson Père & Fils Pommard 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

Ruby color. Nose of cherry, some earth. Palate of red cherry, mild earthiness, spice. Less lush, more structured than the Volnay in the flight. Less open today than the Volnay but overall a better wine. More typically Burgundian.
