Introduction

Wonderful dinner and wines at Mike D's. Lots of distractions from taking tasting notes, including the beautiful views over the city and harbour, the Venetian crystal chandeliers adorning the rooms, the warm fire in the fireplace, the tour of the two wine cellars and the wine-glass room...not to mention the lively conversation and photo-shoot presentation of food, that tasted as good as it looked.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2003 Bollinger Champagne 2003 by Bollinger 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Very pleasant Champagne. Moderate Brut sweetness, moderate acidity... moderate in everything (intensity of aromas and flavours, alcohol, body, length, complexity, etc).

  • 2003 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Lemon yellow. Nicely intense nose of melons, apricots and light oakiness. On palate, an abundance of sweet fruit and minerality, good acidity, fairly concentrated, with excellent length and complexity. Great on its own and stunning with mushroom and truffle soup.

  • 1998 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Ruby, matte. Intense nose of fruit, flowers and earth. Intense on palate too with savoury and fruity richness, good minerality, just-right acidity, ripe tannins. Very long and complex; continued developing/improving in the glass over a few hours. Outstanding, WOTN.

  • 1997 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Ruby, glossy and bright. Very earthy on the nose, with some fruit, spice and gamey notes. On palate, moderate intensity of flavours, moderately acidic, a little short and simple compared to others. Did not improve with time in glass.

  • 1996 Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Purple, glossy. On nose, licorice and balsamic notes, subtle fruit and earthiness. On palate, heavy minerality (even salty), under-ripe fruits, slightly sharp acidity. Others loved this wine; I couldn't find its greatness, at least when compared to the 1998.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Romanée St. Vivant

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Unimpressive nose of light licorice and mint, a little VA, some oak, cardboard; no fruit. Seemed sharply acidic and tannic, perhaps because there was nothing soft to balance the hard components. Maybe it was an off bottle? If not, then I don't have enough experience with the producer to judge its present state or its potential to develop. No score.

  • 1996 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Very expressive nose of fruit, earth and animaliness. On palate, more wild animals, minerality, fruit and earth; nice and subtle oakiness. So savoury. Big tannins for a PN and highish acidity. Very long and complex. Second favourite of the night.

  • 2006 Anthem Pinot Noir Discover 91 Points

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Typical young PN-look. Giant cherry/berry candied nose at first, developing complex earthy and savoury aromas with time in the glass; oak is evident but not off-putting. On palate, very savoury and minerally in the foreground, with fruit lurking just behind. A little short at the mid-palate, but might develop that greater length and complexity with age or added time in decanter. Showed surprisingly well considering its youth and that it was in a lineup with some exceptional Burgs.
