Introduction

I had a buddy over at the house who loves Nebbiolo and I figured it might be fun to check in on these 2015's from different appellations of Piemonte. All three were popped and poured and enjoyed over three hours.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2015 Ferrando Carema White Label (Etichetta Bianca) 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Carema

Popped and poured; consumed over a three hour period. No formal notes. The 2015 Ferrando “Etichetta Bianca” pours a striking transparent garnet moving towards an iron oxide rim. It almost looks advanced…but Nebbiolo has a tendency to do that. On the nose, a lovely mix of red and black fruits, both ripe and desiccated. There is also tar, dried roses and leather and dried spices. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with significant structure. Confirming the notes on the nose. The warmth of 2015 shines through with the ripeness of of the fruits nearly coming across a bit stewed (but not overblown). It’s complex and already starting to show some secondary characteristics. Drink now through 2035.

  • 2015 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Popped and poured; consumed over a three hour period. No formal notes. The 2015 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco pours a deeper garnet color with a translucent core. Medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. No signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is currently bursting with red and dark fruits: blackberries, Luxardo cherry, pomegranate, green herbs, red flowers, green herbs, and tar. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. The notes on the nose are confirmed. The finish is long and savory. Really compelling stuff in the context of the night. I think the 2015’s are drinking so well right now. Unfortunately, this is my last bottle of the “classico” but I’ll be on the hunt for more if I can score at a good price. Drink now if you’re going to allow for some evolution in the glass or enjoy through 2035.

  • 2015 Proprietà Sperino Lessona 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Lessona

Popped and poured; consumed over a three hour period. No formal notes. The 2015 Propriety Sperino “Lessona” pours a more ruddy color; more ruby than garnet and little signs of color oxidization. On the nose, the wine is initially reductive but that blows off after a few minutes revealing bright, crunchy red fruits; cherries cranberries and pomegranate with red flowers, dried herbs and stony minerals. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with firm structure. This really improved with air. The finish is long and the texture is gorgeous. This is a classy expression of Nebbiolo that gave me the impression that the best is yet to come. Drink now with patience but best after 2025 and through 2035+

Closing

All three were lovely but the 2015 Produttori "classico" is singing right now and was the consensus favorite of the night. That being said, it was fun to taste Nebbiolo from different geographies in Piemonte from the same vintage. The range of expression from Carema to Lessona to Barbaresco is undeniable.
