Strand Cellars, Croydon
Tasted Friday, July 7, 2023 by chatters with 28 views
As I was still recovering from my torn calf I had a rare Friday off work so meandered, very slowly, over to Strand to see Anton, Vlad and taste some wines.
What a lot of fun. A few nice wines here for me: The la nerthe blanc, the les deux and the duke.
2022 Kilikanoon Riesling Mort's Block
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Watervale
Pretty fresh citrus/floral top notes, a little sulphur. Medium plus intensity acidity, quite tart on the palate, bone dry, muted fruit shows a little citrus...if it had a touch of residual sugar here would make the fruit pop a bit more, tiny little bit disappointing

2018 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône Mademoiselle du Mont
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Caramel, cream, butter, sweet spice, new oak notes dominate the nose, with time and agitation t begins to reveal a savoury underpin, touch of berry. Juicy, very slight sour, tangy tight tannins are a little woody and those oak flavours are here as well with the savoury berries. Hmm.

2019 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône Villages
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages
A little concentrated red berry, savoury underpin, a little sweet spice. Medium pus intensity acidity, red berry fruit is less concentrated and more savoury not the palate, tannins are silky textured but this is slightly dilute as a well. Meh.

Slightly reductive, rubbery, with time and agitation red berry and sweet spice, time shows aa little blackberry. Juicy acidity, fresh, red and blackberry, aa little alcohol warmth talc texture tannins persist. Initially, because of the freshness, I thought this was a a McLaren Vale, 2012, shiraz grenache.

2018 Kilikanoon Baudinet Blend
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Slightly reductive concentrated red berry with a little black plum, touch of strawberry compote with time, sweet spice, clean and fruit forward. Juicy, slightly jammy, red fruit with a little blackberry in support. There is a sense of freshness that feels a little manufactured. Tannins are persistent. Hmm.

2018 Kilikanoon Grenache Duke Reserve
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Slightly reductive then more savoury, slightly concentrated and ripe red berries show strawberry notes, plenty of oaky spice, slight alcohol prickle lends a touch of pepperiness. On the palate it is both fresh and fleshy, the fruit less obviously concentrated, talc textured tannins persists with the red berries. Simple, young but balanced. Rather lovely.
