Flight 1 - Dr. Loosen (8 Notes)

  • 2021 Dr. Loosen Riesling Red Slate 88 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A wonderfully alluring blend of fresh flowers, white flowers, elderflower and apple blossom. A fresh entry with crisp apple/malic-edged acidity. Intense the wine is approachable, refreshing and uncomplicated, with a very linear flavour profile that is dominated by apple. Despite the wine having a very low residual sugar level, it is well-balanced. Fairly long.

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A bright and crisp white, offering notes of almond, apple, and white flowers, with a hint of sweetness. Balanced by racy acidity, the wine is easy drinking with the flavours of fresh green apples. Quite tight and linear, with a fairly simple profile and lingering finish.

  • 2020 Dr. Loosen Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): Soft almond and mineral aromas join white flowers and blossom. Complex, the palate entry is full of incisive, edgy acidity augmented by the mineral and river stones yet balanced with nougat and a subtle sprinkle of spice with juicy white grapefruit, adding a mouthwatering element. It finished dry, clean and chalky and was a real treat. Right up my street!

  • 2020 Dr. Loosen Graacher Domprobst Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): Sublime aromas of lifted floral notes, then flower blossom, wet river stones, moss and a combination of candied apples and drizzled honey on apple towards honeycomb. An edgy acidity, resulting in fabulous linearity exuding lime zest, mineral and crushed stone, is then rounded out, plumping up the mid-palate, which is soft and inviting, with ripe Forelle pears, a hint of peach blossom, and sweet almonds. Initially, this is a touch quiet/sotto voce, the flavours build on the palate and are well-balanced; A long, rewarding finish, this wine will go higher as it develops.

  • 2020 Dr. Loosen Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Großes Gewächs Alte Reben 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): This 2020 is a strong expression of the varietal, showing intense aromas of peach, nectarine, and pear mingled with delicate floral notes. Lightly reductive initially, the palate is tightly structured with mineral edges accented by a pinch of citrus. I get a sinewy texture on the palate with light peach and apple flesh complimented by pleasant, saline notes and a puff of chalk. This is a delicate, tight, well-balanced wine that is zesty, yet the stone fruit provides a sensation of cream, all leading to a long, lingering farewell. Excellent.

  • 2021 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): From steeper slopes with more iron in the soil. Floral, fragrant notes of gentle apple blossom, white peach and dried pineapple permeate the nose. Focused entry with ripe fruits, sweet apple and a smear of vanilla. The cooler vintage suits the wine well, combining a tangy, zippy acidity, giving a linear mid-palate, refreshing notes with medium length. Full of character.

  • 2020 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): A refreshing and complex wine, abundant with flavours of ripe peaches, golden apples, and pear with a gentle hint of sweetness. Its juicy, crunchy acidity creates a good balance, while its warmer vintage adds a slight fatness to the finish. 2020 was a warmer vintage with decent acidity but not the verve nor dynamism of 2021. Lingers on the palate veering more to green apple than yellow yet becoming a little sweeter as the one opens up. Has the potential to age.

  • 2019 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

(Tasted Blind): Crystal clear ripe peaches, nectarines and exotic floral notes deliver an incredibly pungent and attractive nose. A line of mouthwatering, citrus-inspired acidity is balanced by a wealth of sweet tropical and exotic fruits. Tight, there are some slate aspects of mineral here, a glassy texture and an alluring, beckoning feel to the wine. Subtle, tense and clearly shy, this has concentration and depth with a gorgeous pithy grapefruit/lemon zest extending to a long finish. Brilliant wine!

Flight 2 - With Meal at the Bailey Restaurant (1 Note)

  • 2019 Thorne & Daughters Sémillon Paper Kite 93 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley

(Tasted Blind): Vines planted in 1963, of which 5% are Semillon Gris. The bouquet shows bright, marinated orange slices, hints of smoke and tarragon. A vibrant wine with an intense depth of flavour, and richness to the mid-palate balanced by a crisp acidity all give a complex and harmonious feel. Full-bodied and focussed with great concentration, the flavours of tart satsuma, wet stone, lime and kakiebos meet an attractive mix of green apples and stone fruits complexed by cream-topped scones(!) A long, gently pithy finish and a delightful lingering aroma.
