Introduction

Randy Ullom hecked and hawed us through his moustache, eyes a-twinkling, as he introduced us to these wines and the wine making philosophy at Kendall Jackson

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2019 Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay Vintner's Reserve

    USA, California

Medium minus intensity aromas of butter, stone fruit (which ripens with hand warmth to show a little pineapple), creamy lees work, touch of sweet spice and vanilla. In the mouth it's juicy with textured burr from the oak, breadth on the mid-palate, touch of alcohol warmth and tropical fruit here as well, finishes a touch bitter, feels a little soft and quite American.

  • 2019 Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay Grand Reserve

    USA, California

A little meaty, herb note, initially, stone fruit, a little white peach, butter, cream, toast. Juicy, buttery, again a little textured burr but its more bolshy and ripe on the palate than note nose implies, it's still a little tangy but again it's a bit big and slightly bolshy.

  • 2021 Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay Camelot Highlands

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Pops a little more on the nose, a little more citrus here to accompany the stone fruit which, as the wine warms, tends to show a little more tropical notes. Butter, lees work present here as well as a fair lick of polished oak. In the mouth it's densely oaky, plenty of leesy breadth, texture proves quite drying here, it's a bit on the flabby side, butter, Randy says 'oily' and I'm inclined to agree...I think he means it as a positive - which this time I'm inclined to disagree. Handles its stated 15.4% alcohol reasonably well.

  • 2019 Kendall-Jackson Pinot Noir Vintner's Reserve California

    USA, California

tending to cherry, black rather than red berry backed by sweet spice, a touch of earth, forest floor here as a well. Juicy, a little fruit sweetness but the fruit is a touch non-delineated, textured grip is slightly drying, alcohol warmth on the finish. Nose nicer than the palate.

  • 2021 Kendall-Jackson Pinot Noir Jackson Estate Outland Ridge Anderson Valley

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Oak! Slightly savoury underpin, ripe, concentrated dark fruits show mostly as black cherry, plenty of spice. Juicy, plenty of drying though softly textured oaky tannins, fair lick of alcohol warmth, concentrated black cherry that proves quite ripe. Lacks acid, finishes warm. Oddly it's also a little dull.

  • 2020 Kendall-Jackson Zinfandel Vintner's Reserve

    USA, California, North Coast

Plummy, rich, vanilla, sweet spice, very slightly herbaceous underpin, touch of savoury spice, smidge of plain chocolate. Juicy, savoury, plummy again, alcohol warmth is well managed, softly tannic grip, A perfectly pleasant, clean, well made Zinfandel

  • 2019 Kendall-Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve

    USA, California

Ripe, slightly concentrated blackcurrant, that is more compote than jam, married to a very slight pyrazine underpin. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, super chewy, grippy tannins are massively persistent though quite silky textured, the blackcurrant pyrazine follow this, slight alcohol warmth intrudes slightly on the finish. Okay.

Closing

There was a distinct lack of freshness here for me for the chardonnays and the pinots. Having said that the Zinfandel was simple and pleasant, the Cabernet was also quite nice.
