Introduction

Fabulous birthday celebration for Rich with La Tache! Thanks Rich!

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2002 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light golden, excellent color; aromatic, brioche, fantastic aromas, lemon oil; palate is medium bodied, standard dosage but well integrated, lemon-lime, brioche; long finish. Lovely Taittinger. 94
Day 2: Still a lovely, classic, tete-du-cuvee champagne. Enjoyable, balanced, not necessarily unique in style but impeccably done.

  • 2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light golden, excellent color; medium intensity aromatics, pear; palate is full bodied, fresh medium-plus acid, balanced alcohol, fruit has largely integrated and not a ton of tertiary complexity, very fresh; medium length finish. Nice wine, would expect a bit more depth from Raveneau. 90
2 hours later: richer, more stone fruits, showing a bit more complexity and depth than earlier. Lovely burgundy. 91

  • 2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Vireuils 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Yellow-golden; aromatic, slightly oxidative but not overly so, stone fruits, bruised apple; palate is full bodied, lovely high acid, balanced alcohol, complex and deep flavors, slightly nutty; finish is long. This is lovely white burgundy, showing more mature than the 2000 Raveneau but also more enjoyable. 93

  • 2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Light ruby, slightly cloudy; intense aromatics, like beyond belief, spice, strawberry, floral, a little clove and cinnamon; palate is medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, strawberry, some spice, not quite as crazy as the nose but still well balanced with excellent acidity and balanced alcohol; finish is long. Drinking well now. 97-98

  • 1998 Château Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Medium-full bodied, minimal bricking for its age; aromatic, blackberry, black currant, some minerals, some very slight vegetal and forest floor; palate is full bodied, medium-high acidity, balanced impeccable alcohol, black fruited, minerals, quite young, spectacular depth and balance; long finish. Spectacular Bordeaux at very early maturity. 95-96

  • 2003 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

From 375mL. Deeper golden color with hints of orange; aromatic, youthful orange fruits with crystalline purity, some botrytis baking spices, slight honey, mature notes not yet present; palate is full bodied, richly textured but with refreshing acidity, primary orange fruits, fades just a bit through the midpalate, alcohol is medium-high but well integrated; finish is medium-plus length, showing some complexity. 5 years since my last taste of this vintage, and I think this is showing a bit more closed, still with good balance and surprisingly good acidity given the vintage, but less depth of flavor and length and no mature notes yet. Deferring score until this gets a bit more air...
3 hours air: integrated well, substantially more open than when first opened, but nose definitely requires a bit of attention and it’s not as in your face as it used to be, orange marmalade, stone fruit; palate has evolved more than the nose with some burnt caramel, honeyed, lovely balance, showing lovely maturity now; finish is long and balanced. This is definitely better than when I first opened it, but not as striking as 5 years ago. I think this will continue to open with more time, and showing well now at early maturity. An above average vintage of Yquem, and far outperformed for the vintage. I think my other bottles can probably use at least 3-5 more years before I open another. 95-96
