Introduction

Four flights of 3 blind wines were presented. Each flight was of a (mainly) single varietal. One wine was under $10, one was under $20 and the other was over $20.

Flight 1 - CHARDONNAY (3 Notes)

The cheapest wine was preferred.

Flight 2 - PINOT NOIR (3 Notes)

The mid priced wine was preferred. The little penguin is evil.

  • 2007 The Little Penguin Pinot Noir 80 Points

    Australia, South Eastern

Shy nose. Fruity, watery, thin and short. Fruit moves towards a sweet strawberry and bubblegum vein. Some cloves. This is too manufactured and clinical for me. $5.99.

  • 2006 Owen Roe Pinot Noir Sojourner 84 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

More correct pinot flavors that the train wreck of a wine the "Little Penguin" was. Cherries and raspberries, with good mid palate sap. A bit of alcoholic heat. Seems a bit overdone without the quality of fruit to support it. Too ripe. $26.99.

  • 2006 Elvenglade Pinot Noir Reserve 86 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Dusty cherry nose. Fleshy middle. Cranberries on the palate. Fruit driven and simple, but less heat than the other wines in the flight. $17.99.

Flight 3 - TEMPRANILLO (3 Notes)

The cheapest wine was preferred.

Flight 4 - CABERNET SAUVIGNON (3 Notes)

The mid priced wine was preferred. There are a lot of mediocre Cabs out in California.

Closing

In general, nothing that really rocked me. But, as expected, price is not an indicator of quality.
