Introduction

Terra Rossa deserves to be in the title without further introduction as this is a fantastic authentic family run Italian dining restaurant that is absolutely a destination for unpretentious offlines with humble yet thoroughly appropriate cuisine. Oh and as a side note, there were some wines as well...

  • 2014 G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Iron filings, violets, spice on the nose. Quite coarse tannins and burly rather than graceful. This needs a lot of cellar time, but not sure it has the fruit to pull through. Possibly a bit heavy handed and dare I say it over extracted.

  • 2014 Grasso Tiziano Barolo Briccolina 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Darker in colour. Rhubarb, a touch of oak and pencil lead on the nose. Quite prominent acidity, vibrant red fruit initially masked the Serralunga tannins. Seemed much better in first 15 minutes and then became a bit muddled.

  • 2014 Roagna Barbaresco Albesani 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Darker translucent red in colour with nose showing darker red fruits, freshly cut flowers, and a little smoke. Medium to medium full in body, satiny tannins, and darker fruits once again. Well balanced and focused delivery yet would benefit from cellar time.

  • 2014 Roagna Barbaresco Pajè 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Served a little warm initially. Nose showed dark fruits and a little spice and on the palate round tannins and dark fruit. Seemed to improve in the glass (the glass was put in an ice bucket to cool it a bit!). Did not seem as accomplished as the Albesani served alongside.

  • 2014 Elvio Cogno Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Potpourri, menthol and red fruit on the quite regal nose. Seemed to show some class and stature yet for me it seemed a little acerbic on the finish. Perhaps in another 3 to 5 years this will blossom? Score based upon performance on the evening rather than potential.

  • 2014 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nicely lifted with forest floor and red fruits. Silky, graceful and very pure although possibly a little light. A lovely soulful wine which is very much in its window and does not need to be cellared. Even so, I did not find any je ne sais quo that elevated this wine to be the standout pack leader, unlike just about everyone else around the table! Would be interested to see if this would be unanimous WOTN in a blind tasting. Not taking anything away from it, just posing the question!

Closing

Joy to be found in Barbaresco, and more challenging wines to be found in Barolo. On the basis of two of the Produttori crus being so excellent, I would extrapolate that they all must be superb - and congratulations if these are in your cellar. Commiserations for those who bought and perhaps overpaid for too much smart Barolo.
