    Full Pull Piemontese Gems, 12/17/2018

(G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole) Hello friends. Today we have the latest in our year-ending Instant Gratification series of offers. These all contain wines that are in the warehouse and ready for immediate pickup post-allocation (allocations will take place tomorrow at 10am). We have just one more pickup weekend in 2018 (Dec 20-22), then our usual two-week holiday closure. Our first open pickup weekend in 2019 will be Jan 10-12. Last month we offered two wines from famed “Barolo Boy” Domenico Clerico and they sold out immediately. It was a good reminder of just how attractive Piemontese Nebbiolo is this time of year. So, when we tasted today’s wines, it was an easy decision. We bought out the remaining stock of both with this Instant Gratification series in mind. Both parcels are borderline size-wise (the Vajra especially). We’ll set upper order limits at 6 Paitin/3 Vajra, but actual allocations are likely to be more like 2-3 Paitin and 1-2 Vajra. Still, when it comes to these gems of the Piedmont, a little bit is better than none at all. Vinous: Copyrighted material withheld. Vajra is a well-loved Piedmont producer among our list members, and Bricco delle Viole is their flagship Barolo. It’s a rare treat when we’re able to offer this evocative, beautiful bottle. Bricco delle Viole is a 4.79 hectare vineyard that sits 470 metres above sea level. Its high altitude and long ripening season set it apart from the surrounding lower elevation vineyards. The 2014 clocks in at 13.5% alcohol and possesses a hauntingly aromatic nose, full of raspberries, leather, flowers galore, crunchy leaves, and anise. The palate is an honest expression of generous Nebbiolo, with well-tuned structure and beautiful fruit. Many vintages of Barolo take years to come around, whereas this 2014 is a total pleasure play, offering wonderful abundance unusual for young Barolo. If you’d like to drink it this holiday season, consider a multi-hour decant and a nice prime rib to let it show its best. This is downright glorious Barolo.
