Introduction

We decided to have a barbecue today depsite the searing heat. The focus was going to be on port, Bordeaux and big Cabs!

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

Our first phase consisted of the Bordeauxs going back to a '71 Lascombes. This was more of a show bottle since we didn't expect much to be left on it. I highlighted a Dunn which turned out to be rather mediocre and the Monbousquet were my favorite.

  • 1971 Château Lascombes Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Brown sludge like color, nose of a mature sherry and nothing else going on. The cork disintegrating upon contact was good indication this wine was done. Did not drink.

  • 2000 Dunn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Did not show as well I as had expected. Slightly tannic, full bodied but without the viscocity and strong cherry notes of other vintages. Somewhat flat.

  • 1994 Château Monbousquet 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

OMG I got another bottle of the '94 from my newly repaired personal wine cellar and what a difference serving temperature makes!!! The heady nose had 'old Bordeaux' musty air, dark fruits, spice and tobacco. Leather on the palate. Smooth with decent finish. While not outstanding, the nose was just wonderful. This was showing so much better than the previous 2 bottles. Luckily I have 4 left! :-)

  • 1997 Château Monbousquet

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Mich more fruit forward than the 2004, yet still displaying elements of leather and spice. Much lighter color as well.

  • 2002 Conn Creek Anthology 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Classic ruby color with intense red fruit on the palate, smooth tannins. I don't care for the sweet vanilla smell typical of American Oak-aged Cabs.

  • 2004 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Second time tasting this and compared to the '05 it is well structured. Not overly fruity but dark with earthy elements. I will get more of these.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

Alex brought a vintage port for our enjoyment to compare against an old Colheita. What huge differences and both were amazing to drink!
