Introduction

VM organized the west-suburban contingent of the CWM for a holiday dinner centered on a theme of 2008 Champagnes.

Lady VM ordered for the table and we grazed and casually sipped through the wines at our own pace. Participants were M/M Vino Me, M/M DantheRhonefan, M/M billhike, M/M Blue Oval, jcubed & S, Z&R and Domino and I.

Dishes from the kitchen were:
Apps: yellow fried tofu, spring rolls, and samusas
Salads: tea leaf salad, ginger salad and tofu salad
Noodles: vermicelli with chicken and wheat noodles with beef
Curries: Chicken mango, beef with potatoes and lastly, shrimp

Flight 1 - The Champagnes (8 Notes)

The wines showed the strength of the vintage and I am quite glad to have most of these in our cellar (our anniversary year).

Flight 2 - Other wines (6 Notes)

  • NV Rhys Perpetual Reserve 91 Points

    USA, California

A blend of the 2016, 2017 and 2018, disgorged in April 2023. Opens with a nice richness with orchard fruit, toasted nuts and marshmallow qualities. There's plenty of fruit on the palate as well. Very nice. (BO)

  • 2015 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Magnum. Medium yellow color. Aromas of petrol, pear, stone fruit and apple. Balanced. Stone fruit, slate, lime and petrol flavors. I was surprised by how well this is drinking out of this format. (J3)

  • 2013 WesMar Pinot Noir Fort Ross - Seaview 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview

Second of four, double decanted off its sediment (very little) two hours before it was poured. Deep pink color with no visible bricking. Cherry, nutmeg and carnation notes. Impeccably balanced, with flavors of cherry, dried herbs and wild strawberry. Beautiful and at its absolute peak for my palate. I'll grab my remaining two bottles from storage and drink within the next few months.

  • 2011 R. López de Heredia Rioja Viña Tondonia

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Magnum. Deep color. Aromas of red berry fruit, dill and clay follow through on the palate. Full-bodied, with medium tannins and a nice finish. Balanced. Picks up a nice wood spice in the finish. Very good, if a bit on the young side in this format. (Z&R)
