VM organized the west-suburban contingent of the CWM for a holiday dinner centered on a theme of 2008 Champagnes.
Lady VM ordered for the table and we grazed and casually sipped through the wines at our own pace. Participants were M/M Vino Me, M/M DantheRhonefan, M/M billhike, M/M Blue Oval, jcubed & S, Z&R and Domino and I.
Dishes from the kitchen were:
Apps: yellow fried tofu, spring rolls, and samusas
Salads: tea leaf salad, ginger salad and tofu salad
Noodles: vermicelli with chicken and wheat noodles with beef
Curries: Chicken mango, beef with potatoes and lastly, shrimp
The wines showed the strength of the vintage and I am quite glad to have most of these in our cellar (our anniversary year).
Thanks to m/m VM for organizing a fun evening. It's always good to see friends and catch up- we need to do this more often.
2008 Charles & Alphrede (Ch. & A.) Prieur Champagne Grand Prieur Millesime Brut 88 Points
France, Champagne
Pale color with green apple and chalk elements in the bouquet and on the palate. The most straightforward of the Champagnes tonight but also the least expensive. A fine little weeknight Champagne and a good starter for tonight’s dinner.

2008 Franck Bonville Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 93 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Magnum. In a word, this is lovely, and ended up as wotn for a few of the group. Notes of lemon curd, toast and baked bread. Flavors of pear, bricohe and candied lemon. Orchard fruit, leon and wet dough on the palate. Drinking surprisingly well in this format. 93+ pts. (VM)

2008 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points
France, Champagne
Magnum. Pale color. A bit reticent at first, this really needed some time to open up. Chalk, apple and lemon notes. Fine bead. Pear and mineral on the palate with a fruity sweetness in the finish. A bit too early, these need time in the cellar yet, especially in this format. Hold.

2008 Launois Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Special Club Blanc de Blancs 92 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Aromas of citrus, apple and baked bread with orchard fruit flavors dominating the palate. This too was better once it had been open a while, picking up an intriguing honeycomb quality to go with the abundance of orchard fruit. 92+ pts. (VM)

2008 Doyard Champagne Grand Cru Les Lumières Grand Cru Extra Brut 94 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Deeper color than many of the others to this point, showing pear, red apple and peach notes. Underlying doughy quality. Quite creamy in texture with perfectly ripe orchard fruit flavors. becomes more nuanced as it sits, adding vanilla crème and dried stone fruit qualities. This was Domino's wotn. Very generous contributions to the evening's festivities. (DTRF)

2008 Pierre Moncuit Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé 92 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Tasted alongside the extra brut. Apple and chalk with a slightly sweet, candied element as well. Orchard fruit, chalk and dried apple flavors of the palate. Fine bead. Excellent. It seems the table was nearly split in half between preferences for this or the extra brut. (BH)

2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut La Grande Dame 94 Points
France, Champagne
Initially a bit reticent, this too needed some time to wake up and begin to show off. Rich and nutty with apple, ginger and wet dough notes as well. Flavors of marshmallow fluff, brioche, dough, lemon curd and baked apple. This was the first bottle of this we have opened in a while that needed to breathe a bit before it really got going. 94-95 pts.
