Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2020 Château Canon 95 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

14.5% ABV. Medium ruby appearance. Magnum pour. Black cherry, red plum, red bramble fruit, nutmeg, and a very distinct underlying layer of graphite/ minerality. Grainy but approachable tannins. Beautiful acidity gives a nice lift. Silky on the palate. Spicy, elegant, with great fruit purity. Tough for me to see a 100 point wine here right now, but this was very enjoyable. Need to lay this down for some time so more nuance comes out.

  • 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

14% ABV. Deep ruby appearance. Perfectly ripe black bramble fruits, charcoal, tobacco leaf, clove. Very deep pitch to the fruit. Medium density on the palate yet this packs big drive and concentration. Nice length of finish. Wonderful aciidty level given the density of the fruit. Tannins are still rounding into form. Great potential here.

  • 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

13.5% ABV. Medium ruby appearance. Black fruit, anise, blackcurrant leaf, capsicum, dark chocolate. A bit more herbaceous than I prefer. Tannins not ready, but not offensive either. Acidity is good, not great given the ripeness of the fruit. Elegant mouthfeel. Needs more time to develop, feels clumsy right now.

  • 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

14.2% ABV. Medium ruby appearance. Similar cut to the ‘20 tasted next to it but with less herbaceousness. Black fruit, violets, anise, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate. Good acidity, elegant mouthfeel, with approachable tannins. Also feels a bit more dense and concentrated than the ‘20.

  • 2019 Château Lynch-Bages 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Deep ruby appearance. Dark fruits galore, pretty florals, nutmeg, tobacco leaf, charcoal. Mouthcoating on the palate - fantastic depth and complexity. Intoxicating nose. Tannins are fine-grained and nicely integrated. Great acidity level. Never ending finish. This is scary good now. Big potential with further age.

  • 2010 Château Pontet-Canet 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

14.5% ABV. Deep ruby core, with garnet developing at the rim. High-pitched black fruit, violet, anise, graphite, cigar humidor, blackcurrant leaf, scorched earth. Beautiful perfume and structure on this. Tannins are still very present, but more rounded than I expected given the reputation of 2010. Nice acidity level. LONG finish. Already fantastic now but this will develop even more wonderful complexity with more time.
