  • 2007 Hunter's Sauvignon Blanc 81 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Very fruit-driven, good acidity but not very well balanced. A little sharp and alcohol coming through hard at the back (though I'm oversensitive to alcohol, so other people might not be bothered by this). Not a wine I'd buy again, especially at £10 retail.

  • 2006 Paul Cluver Chardonnay 72 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

Not my thing at all. Very interesting to taste but wouldn't want to drink more than half a glass of this.

Nose is absolutely dominated by tar/fireworks/gunpowder. Very hidden fruit, loads of oak. On the palate burnt metal and oak is coming through very strong. I find so little fruit here... Balances well at the back though, finishes warm but not hot, still too much oak though. More residual sugar, a little clammy. Very interesting but not recommended.

Flight 5 (1 Note)

  • 2006 Jean-Luc Joillot Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge

France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune

Far too alcoholic on the nose. Once through that though, good fruit, redcurrants, strawberry and mulberry with a little warm spice. Quite tannic, needs a good few years before drinking again. Didn't get a chance to decant so can't comment on that. A little caramelised on the palate, lots of red berries, alcohol not so obvious here. No score given.

Flight 6 (1 Note)

  • 2007 Stoneburn Pinot Noir

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Not very complex but nice nose with sour red berries. Mouthwatering. high acidity (which I love) on the palate, woody but not overoaked. Sour red berries. Smooth, pretty long finish. Not the best wine ever, but probably worth the retail price (£8.50). No score given.

  • 2006 Domaine Etienne Pochon Crozes-Hermitage 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

This wine is excellent. Lots to say. On the nose, baked plums, chocolate, stewed dark fruits. If they made those sweets, 'millions' in grape flavour, this wine would smell of them. A bit floral in the background. Palate is lovely, like a rich, plum pie, warm and thick with more chocolate and a kind of port & plum reduction. Oak very much in the background. A little tannic on my teeth, could definitely do with a few more years. Long finish with coffee coming in at the end. At £11 it's not CHEAP but worth seeking out. I'm torn between 89 & 90 but there's so much here for me, it's got to be.

Flight 8 (1 Note)

  • 2005 Best's Great Western Shiraz 88 Points

Australia, Victoria, Western Victoria, Great Western

Nose: Spiced cherry jam, rasperry, warm. Palate: A little too sweet, jammy, lacks subtlety, very rich dark fruit. Tastes very nice but a bit in your face for me. Good long, slightly acidic (yum) finish. A very nice wine. £9
