NK graciously invited us to his place for a second round of tasting. This time with more emphasis on italians.

• 2006 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 82 Points

  France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Chardonnay

  Clean nose of chalk and slate. Good ripe lemons that finishes neatly. A bit short but pleasant.

  Rotten eggs, petrol that does give way to more pineapples subsequently. Good lychees and ripe apples balanced nicely with orangey acidity.

  Lovely sweet pineaplles with just a dash of petrol. On the palate, pokka green tea with a good measure and balance of restrained pineapple-longan sweet fruit cocktail. Very quaffable now.

  Orchids, light small berries and tainted with some cigarette ash. Delicately sweet marashcino cherries but showing intentional acidity. Has some milo powder flavours to it as well.

  An interesting developed nose of barnyard dog, brambles, dark spices and herbs. Good attack of nicely-ripened, nicely-violets-scented cherries. Liquerish on the finish with a good dose of licourice and spices. Lovely wine.

• 2005 Agricola Punica Barrua 80 Points

  Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT

  Dark berries and capsicum scented by licourice, woodspice, hints of flowers and given a menthol lift. On the palate, mentholised dark berries with grippy tannins. Quite extracted. A farmer's wine.

• 2004 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT 86 Points

  Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

  Rich and layered nose comprising barnyard, aged cabbage, leather, crayola and durian stink! Lavendar-accented plum berries with nice ripe dark blueberries. Shows good length and a good strike of balance. Costing half the price of its more famous eldest sibling - the Sassicaia, this packs so much more QPR.

  First of all, this has beautiful elegant but strong thin legs in the glass. When first poured, it seperated on the sides of the glass like moses seperating the red sea. Attractive nose of dark roasted ethopian coffee beans. Really deep aromas of sweet dark caramelised dark plums and berries. Lovely fresh cherries giving balance to cassis blueberry stew. Gentle fine tannins. A model of finesse.

  Coffeelifted aromas of dark cheries. Bright cherries with chalky tannins. Good weight but mostly unidimensional.

  Compared to the 06 vintage, this has more flavours of spice accented cherries. More cherry acidity and cut to it. Sharper fruits. Mouth-coating tannins.

  Sweet indian flowers married witjh coffee, dark ripe berries nicely lifted by liquer. Teeth-coating tannins. Some smoke and dried earth on mostly plummish fruits. Quite balanced and elegant.

  Lovely coffee bean-smoked aromas of dried flower petals and violets-accentuated varnish. Deep flavours of big plums and dark cherries reaching within a doldrum of cherry tomatoes. Long lasting teeth coating tannins. Will last.

WOTN for me was the Guildaberto even though it is lower scored than Sassicaia. This is for the fact that there is so much more bang for the buck with this somewhat classy wine.
