The Phoenician, Scottsdale, AZ

I spent a lovely four days in the scorching sun in Scottsdale. The SB is worth seeking out and opening my second birthyear wine was memorable, regardless of the outcome. I also had the pleasure of meeting Jack Bulkin from the board, who recommended a yummy dinner at Christopher's Restaurant/Crush Lounge, a tasty restaurant in Scottsdale. A weekend filled with fun.
2006 Domaine de Fontsainte Corbières Gris de Gris
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières
This had a gorgeous peachy salmon color, but that was the best part about it. Subdued nose giving up nothing with light flavors of rose and faint strawberries on the palate. Nice acidity and refreshing, but simple. Ok-

2008 Veramonte Sauvignon Blanc Reserva
Chile, Casablanca Valley
I enjoyed this. The nose had stone fruits and sweet grapefruit and was sweet enough that I thought for sure it would be a bit flabby, which I don't mind in SB, but quite the opposite. The palate had what I believe others call "bracing acidity"! This was mouth puckering and crisp. Lemon and some minerals, too. At first, it was too acidic for me, but paired with the oily dressing on my salad very well. I'll seek this out for a summer quaffer. Nice.

2007 Flowers Perennial
USA, California, Sonoma County
I expected this would be big and sweet, because it was so young, but it wasn't. It was nice, with only about 15 mins in the glass to open up. This definitely struck me as a cool climate style with sour cherries standing front and center here. This was balanced with smooth tannin and a good bit of acid. Enjoyable.

1971 Beaulieu Vineyard Pinot Noir Beaumont
USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
So, I started buying birth year wines in February and have been waiting to open this since then. I lugged it to AZ, couldn't find a BYO place and ultimately opened it in my hotel room. All that build up and suspense and then... nothing! As I pulled out the cork I got a strong aroma of figs and raisins soaked in vinegar. The vinegar blew off from the nose, but the palate was shot. The color was burnt burgundy with lots of brown at the sides. Still, I have to admit, I was really excited about the whole experience and enjoyed opening it. I also have the 1971 Cab and look forward to cracking that one open as well.
