A great night of fun at home with invited guests enjoying dishes made by Joey and myself. Some modest wines to accompany the food, this was not a night for wine geeks, although inevitably conversation did turn that way at times.

Excellent for a sub $10 sparkling wine. Crisp apple fruits and nice finish.

2003 Lingenfelder Riesling Bird Label

The 2001 was superb, the 2002 good, but this is a mere impersonator of those two releases. Too sweet all around with flat fruit and no punch, finesse or style. Low 80s at best. Avoid.

2004 Chehalem Chardonnay INOX
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Little to enjoy with this. Grapefruit on the nose and in the mouth. I wonder, despite the screw-cap, if this wine was tainted. It seemed a little off with little of the fresh fruit and clean style this wine is known for.

2003 Georges Dubœuf Beaujolais-Villages
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Beaujolais-Villages
Very uninteresting and quite one0dimentional. A solid nose of cherry and some earth and sour and bitter cherry fruits in the mouth which worked but that did not, ultimately, offer much more than that.

2003 Georges Dubœuf Régnié 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Régnié
Not quite as good as I remember it from last year but still very enjoyable. A nose of red cherry and black raspberry, with frit has begun to pick up some secondary flavors and will either develop nicely for 3-4 more years or collapse in bottle. With a core of good fruit my vote goes for the former.

2003 Saint Cosme Côtes du Rhône
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Rather too oaky and one-dimensional from this showing. The fruit is still rich, with ripe blackberry, pepper and spice, but the oak was too much too the forefront. Even a slight chill down didn't help much.

1998 Von Strasser Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain 92 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
Dark ruby, almost garnet. A rich nose of currants, cassis and leather. Tight and tannic in the mouth - am planning to decant for 6 more hours - with nice black currant fruit, a mineral underpinning and lots of upside potential. Medium-bodied with good grip. After 8 hours the wine was open for business with lovely rich mountain fruit, all restrained elegance, some tannin, but nothing over bearing, and great balance. A star from an under-performing vintage.

2001 Domaine La Due Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 89 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
A charming, medium-bodied wine with the fruit one the sweeter side but very smooth and enjoyable and a perfect dinner party wine or something fun to consume with friends. A very attractive, almost flaoral and elegant nose with cassis and black currant and in the mouth some sweet tannins that brings the wine to a tasty conclusion.

2001 Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon 88 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
A solid performance. Decanted but served and consumed immediately. Earthy currant, pencil lead and cherry aromas, a solid mid-palate, very meaty in fact, and quite savory and delicious. Fair value for the $25 price tag.
