Introduction

10 members of the Wine Guild of Charlottesville enjoyed an evening of top dog Côte-Rôtie. Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday night.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2001 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Lancement

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

An elegant wine that offered up a gorgeous nose of rose petal and charcoal. Very well balanced on the palate and quite consistent with the nose. Floral, ashy with a little tart tomato juice note that made me think this needed food to really sing. A bit austere on it's own. All in all a lovely wine that is drinking very well right now.

  • 2001 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Les Embruns

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Although this was the same vintage and same producer as the 1st wine of the night (the Lancement), this wine felt much younger, less integrated. On the nose there was an interesting duality. Rustic garrigue dancing with fine perfume and green pepper/tomato. Odd but nice. On the palate the wine was much softer than the Lancement. More acidity would have served it better. Not enough nerve to really make it sing.

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Tar, floral, potting soil and hints of Anise on the nose. Much riper fruit than the 2001's we tasted earlier. Gorgeaous read and black fruit on the palate with a subtle herbal quality. Seemed older, more resolved than I expected from such a young Côte-Rôtie.

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

WOTN: This was considered by most to be the wine of the night. An amazing nose of bubble gum, anise, bacon fat and forest floor. The ripe red and black fruit is lifted by a solid mineral core. It reminded me a lot of some wines I've had that came from blue clay soils. Drinking very well now but certainly has plenty of life left in it.

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Landonne

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

We gave all these wines plenty of time to breath but this one still needs some years to come around. Very tight right now. Giving up some green pepper and tobacco on the nose. A bit green on the palate with bitter tannins and an ashy bitter finish. Reminded me of many tight young Côte-Rôtie's I've tasted from barrel. Given it's pedigree I think it's safe to say a little time will reward you with something wonderful. Tonight we committed infanticide.

  • 2005 Saxum James Berry Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

I was put off by a slight burned rubber note on the nose. Fortunately the palate didn't follow. It brought ripe red and blue fruit with nice balance and the minerality of a Northern Rhone. Cool toned and not too extracted. A very well done new world wine that handled itself well among some old world legends.

  • 2005 Domaine Georges Vernay Côte-Rôtie Maison Rouge

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Tar, blueberry and shit on the nose. Seriously stinky stuff here. Stark and tart on the palate but nice. Tomato and ash on the finish. A typical young CR. Lacking the tannins to go the distance. I'd pass on this.

  • 2005 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie Les Journaries / Maestria

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

I had this from barrel in May of '07 and it's impressive how it's stayed very true to my notes from then. Red fruit, celery and raw meat on the nose followed by nice ripe red fruit some vegetal tones and expresso on the palate. Needs some time to really come into it's own, but it's certainly on the right track.
