France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
moderately deep yellow verging on gold - nice citrus butter character - refined oak - this wine is not as good as the 1986 Montrachet. Rich smooth entry - seems a little dilute - not a long finish not too much in the way of meal character - not intense - should have been drunk earlier.
red brick - browning only a bit at the rim - great colour. Quite a bit of vinosity left - fruit still intact - cinnamon, vanilla, walnuts, pecans - a powerful nose. Taste is a little thin as the fruit is going a bit. Great length - tastes of grilled nuts and cinnamon. Tannins still apparent on the finish - should be drunk.
very dense opaque colour - deep brick, not a hint of brown at the edge - wow. On the nose, exotic minerals, nuts, gout de terroir, smoke, some cedar. A fascinating and complex nose! The taste is glorious - a very rich and viscous entry -very velvety texture - very few but super smooth tannins - so harmonious - lovely from the first taste to the extended finish (no hole in the middle). Incredible smokey character unfolds in the mouth with licorice and mineral notes. This will keep.
fantastic colour with little sign of browning. Good nose but not as compelling as the LMHB 1959 - cedar box, licorice - some smoke - a touch of VA? This wine did not have the opulence of the LMHB and lacked a bit of structure - seems a bit watery at the finish. Will hold.
opaque young colour - cedar licorice, some earthy leafy character - not as big on the nose as the previous two 1959's but still lovely. On the palate - medium body, sweetish entry, smokey flavour.
very dense colour - impenetrable in the middle - shows little age. Explosive nose of licorice, plums and smoke. Great structure - still good tannins - quite a dry and austere finish. Tatses the way it smells - big, burly with a lot of character.
showing its age - quite light - rust with brown hints at the edge. On the nose - classic cedar bix - smokey oak, some fruit, pencil shavings and a bit of herbaciousness. Light bodied in the mouth - elegant long finish - good mid palate - very harmonious but in the end nothing special.
deepest colour of the three Petrus wines tatsed - near opaque. All of these wines have a very unique smell - they all share a leafy nutty earthyness with coffee and some dry chocolate which is compelling - the 1970 simply has more of these attributes - with plums, buttered popcorn - this is fantastic the most characterful wine of the evening. On the plaate the wine has a full, fat and quite tannic entry - very plummy - great. This will keep.
more youthful looking than the Petrus 1970 - still some dark red tones. On the nose not as compelling as the Petrus 1970 (perhaps due to the amount of CS?) - some vanilla, licorice, smoke, earth and VA. The wine has a velvet texture, not great structure and is not very long - seems a bit watery in the finish - showing its tannins - drink up.
similar in look to the Petrus 1981 but showing a bit more age. On the nose, leafy, ground coffee, quite complex and harmonious - more forthcoming than the 1981. A great taste - more mouthfilling than the 1981, very dry and good structure - super length - even more coffee and chocolate than the 1981 - more intense - more herbacious than the 1970 - a stunning wine.
moderate deep crimson fading to brick. Nose a bit reticent, fruity cinnamon, earthiness, coffee. In the mouth a little lighter and more angular than the 78 and 70's. Full bodied, fat entry, medium fine tannins, coffee, nice finish, good structure with a warm finish.
light yello - some gold developing. Lovely complex nose - some botrytis - citrus, pineapples, creme brulee. Light bodied, dry but long finish - not a blockbuster - wanted a more concentrated flavour and oily texture. Exceptional balance.
