All Amarone, all blind. Notes taken on single pass through, no adjustment for second pass as everyone was pretty tossed by the time we made it through 10 pours of Amarone.

  • 1982 Mazzi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Punta di Villa 88 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (12/20/2009)

Color: copper, Nose: Prunes, campfire, black olives, Palate: Sour cherries, dried cranberries, ash, very light structure, ends slightly sour and puckery. Light to medium bodied. Nice finish though, those sour fruits linger for a long time. Overall: Wonderful nose, boring palate, but balanced and tasty througout.

Color: Deep red, Nose: Dried cherries, gingersnap cookie, hersheys cocoa, mint leaves, cigar tobacco, Palate: Medium bodied, grippy, almost rough tannins, sour cherries, hollows out in the mid-palate although the finish hangs for a good amount of time once the tannins release their grip. Dried dark fruits linger on the finish. Overall: Awesome nose, palate is a bit disjointed (hollow) but still delicious, rough tannins, great finish.

  • 2000 G. Poggi Amarone della Valpolicella Corte Saibante 93 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella

    (12/20/2009)

Nose: Fresh black licorice, prunes, Palate: Very silky, full bodied. Hits hard initially, chocolate covered cherries, pepper, licorice. Awesome sensation on the palate for about 10 seconds after being swallowed. Black licorice and dried fruit hangs around for a nice long finish. Overall: super delicious, if a bit less interesting than the rest this is the most delicious so far. Would be awesome with a fatty steak. **Ended up being my WOTN**

  • 2001 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Campolongo di Torbe 87 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (12/20/2009)

Nose: Dirty laundry hits you right off the bat, once you get around that its soft cherries, some chocolate, a little bit of campfire. Palate: Starts off delicious but picks up some sharp acidity that lingers throughout the palate and into the finish. Cherry, black licorice, tobacco. The finish hangs for awhile but the sour acidity wrecks it for me. Overall: not balanced, odd nose, delicious palate but weird overall. Has enough character to be interesting.

  • 2006 Conte di Bregonzo Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 90 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (12/20/2009)

Nose: Very floral, roses and red berries. Very un-amarone-like. Almost Pinot Noir like on the nose, red fruit with some funk. Palate: Lots of structure, sweet tannins, strong acidity. Red fruit, very fresh. Strawberry yogurt. Almost no dried characteristics, maybe some dried cranberry but not much else. Very red fruit with some red apple. Starts out intense, slightly hollow in places of the mid-palate, short finish compared to the rest. Still delicious, I really enjoy it overall.

  • 2005 Vaona Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 86 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (12/20/2009)

Nose: super smokey, campfire, cigerette butts, something green, either celery or brussel sprouts. Palate: Sour cherries, campfire or leather, dried red fruit over tobacco, super smooth. Low acidity, gentle tannins. Almost a little goopy, needs more structure to frame in it's flavors. Short finish. Overall: goopy, unstructured, funky as hell.

  • 2003 Nicolis Angelo e figli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 91 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico

    (12/20/2009)

Nose: Sour cherries, almost meaty. Palate: Lots of fruit, sour cherries, dried cranberries, red vine, something meaty. Balanced structure but sharp acidity. Super delicate structure that lingers in the background for a long time and deep into the finish. Tastes like a beef stew with a wine base. Very pure in it's fruit, nice gentle structure, very rich. Niceintensity as well, I really like this, missing the fireworks of some of the wines I drank earlier.

Closing

I came away from this tasting with a new found liking of Amarone, how could you not with company like this? It was interesting to see that some of the cheaper bottles scored higher for me. Overall though these wines were all very good, I would have been happy with any of these at home with some food. The Poggi dominated the tasting for me, it was still delightful on the second pass through the wines. (I was feeling no pain)

Thanks again to David and Natasha for hosting, these events always turn out awesome.
