Annual Day Trip to Martinborough

Introduction

The annual pilgrimage to Martinborough, with Justus and Adam. Mostly I did not assign scores because the wines simply are what they are. Scores were only given if there was something remarkable, e.g., good, bad or different from expectation.

Flight 1 - Cabbage Tree Vineyard (1 Note)

This continues to be my favourite PN of NZ -- not just Martinborough. Bought more 2004, as it is still improving. Bought 2006 even though it was not on for tasting. The 2005 was a tough vintage and is yet to be released.

  • 2004 Cabbage Tree Vineyard Pinot Noir 95 Points

    New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa

I know this wine well. I was hoping to try the 2005 or 2006, but neither is ready for release, or even tasting. I did manage to persuade the Bulls to sell me the 2006, which they deem nearly ready for release. Okay, the 2004...it never disappoints. Ruby core and rim, moderately dense. Nicely complex and intense aromas and flavours of berryfruit, clean earth, roasted coffee/cacao. Smooth/ripe tannins, moderate acidity and alcohol. Nice palate weight and body. Very long and complex. Bought four.

Flight 2 - Margrain (11 Notes)

Too bad the 2008 Riesling was from Te Muna -- I much prefer the Martinborough Riesling vineyard. Bought three older Rieslings and a couple of SB Botrytis.

Flight 3 - Schubert (6 Notes)

Nothing noteworthy here, but bought one anyway (PN).

Flight 4 - Vynfields (5 Notes)

Very nice tasting room. Purchased a tasting tray.

Flight 5 - Te Kairanga (9 Notes)

Nothing bad, nothing great. Bought one Runholder. Nice tasting counter and very enjoyable conversations with the servers.

Flight 6 - Ata Rangi (9 Notes)

Always like the Kahu, as do my friends, so bought two. Also bought one PN.
