Introduction

Glad to see Les Nomades back on their game after a bit of a disappointing showing last year. The food was great, especially in the first half of the meal and the service was impeccable. With only 38 it wasn't quite as crowded upstairs as past years as well which was nice. We really should limit to 40 here...

Wines were solid if a bit disappointing compared the list on paper - especially the bordeaux. While I'm not a huge fan of port, these wines were clearly the best of the evening to me.

Overall, a great dinner.

Flight 1 - Passed Hors d'Oeuvres (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Butter Poached Main Lobster with crawfish and trumpet royal mushroom ragout (1 Note)

Flight 3 - Sauteed Loop de Mer with confit leeks, sunchoke and riesling emulsion (1 Note)

  • 1996 Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard 86 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

Substantial bottle variation and mine wasn't one of the better ones. Deep golden color with hints of orange. All caramel and butterscotch on the nose and on into the palate, with even some medicinal notes as well. Drink up.

Flight 4 - Seared Foie Gras with confit potato and carmelized onion jus (1 Note)

Like a super concentrated French Onion soup with Foie - best course of the evening.

  • 1998 Château Coutet Barsac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Consistent showing with the last time - this is a solid blocking and tackling barsac, but really nothing too special going on. Medium yellow color with a decent nose of sweet yellow fruit and a hint of clove. Some sweetness carrying through on the palate, probably on the front end of an evolution toward maturity now.

Flight 5 - Roasted Rack and Loin of Lamb with chantenay carrot, swiss chard, preserved meyer lemon sauce perigueux (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Léoville Las Cases 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Extended decant may not have benefited this wine as it fell short of high expectations. Full deep dark opaque purple color. Lovely forward nose of classic medoc with cedar, pencil lead, and black raspberry fruit. Decent on the palate with good structure and acidity, but a little short on fruit and depth of flavors. This bottle was good, not great.

  • 1982 Château Le Bon Pasteur 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Soft opaque purple color. Slightly canned nose of pruny black fruit. Soft round pruny fruit carried through on the palate. Nice enough wine, but not much stuffing here - disappointing for what it is.

Flight 6 - Fromages Affines (1 Note)

Flight 7 - Chestnut Bonbon Mousse with coffee ganache and guanaja chocolate cremeux (2 Notes)

  • 1970 Graham Porto Vintage 94 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Light purple color. Medium red/purple fruit with just a whiff of heat remining. Lovely sweet round palate. Showing very nicely.

  • 1977 Graham Porto Vintage 93 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Light purple color. Tighter and more focused than the 70, with more energy and concentration. Also still carring more structure and heat though. I expect this wine will eclipse the 70 in time, but just a step behind tonight. 93+ pts.
