Introduction

This was a trade tasting put on by the napa valley vintners association with a wide variety of wines. I was limited to about an hour and a half to two hours, so time was of the essence

Flight 1 - Shafer (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Shafer Merlot 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very pretty nose of berries, red and black currants, red florals, and some tasty tones of red cherries. Good depth with a nice red fruit base and expression

taste: Elegant medium body with nice tannins and a silky feel providing plush tones of berries, red florals, red currants and bing cherries. Good depth and very classy

overall: I always like Shafer merlots. Plush and pretty, these wines always bring out a real elegant merlot that shows off its california roots, but also is restrained at the same time.

  • 2006 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 92 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

nose: big, bold, and rich nose of red cherries, sour cranberries, and red and black currants, and some hi-toned red fruits. Extremely pungent and powerful at the same time, almost like a wild animal right now

taste: Full bodied with rich tannins and deep tones of red and black currants, red fruits, dark red cherries, sour cranberries and some bits of cedary oak round it all out. Not as big on the palate as the nose, but still very young

overall: Needs some time to calm down. This could really turn into something with a slight bit of age on it. Great full body and a pungent nose already, this needs a good decant at this time to really get giong

  • 2006 Shafer Relentless 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very big and bold with rich tones of black fruits, dark red fruits, dark red cherries, and a good amount of anisette. Great depth on the nose with a lot of power behind it

taste: a bruiser on the palate with a rich full body and massive chewy tannins. Deep tones of black fruits, dark red cherries, and a lot of anisette work well together when they show underneath the tannins

overall: Certainly needs a good amount of time to round into shape. A heavyweight boxer of a wine right now that is extremely young, but shows a lot of promise

  • 2005 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select 95 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

nose: rich and heady nose of liqueur tones, black cherries, black and red currants, and dark red fruits. There is a real hi-toned quality to the fruit that is rich and well layered

taste: Full bodied with rich and chewy tannins backed up with a real silky and polished feel with deep tones of liqueur, black cherries, black and red currants, some toasted oak, and some hi-toned red fruits.

overall: Very expressive and full that shows off its pedigree. Great depth on both the nose and palate, this has a great base to age with. This is a great wine right now, and can become a special wine

  • 2007 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 91 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

nose: real delicious and crisp nose of stone fruits, tropical citrus tones, white florals, and white peach tones. Has a more linear approach on the nose with a real good focus to it

taste: excellent medium acidity with a good medium feel that has a more burgundian sense to it. Well balanced and polished on the palate with fresh tones of stone fruits, lemon peels, tropical citrus', and bits of pears and white peaches

overall: Again, another great chard from Shafer. This generally shows for me a more burgundian side to it rather then a heavily oaked and buttery style. There is a real good feel to this on the palate along with having really good aromatics

Flight 2 - Schweiger (4 Notes)

  • 2007 Schweiger Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Uboldi Vineyard 79 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

nose: very smokey with some tropical citrus tones and pears, but also some very weird and off-putting tones of rotted fruit

taste: good lighter feel with medium acidity and tones of pears, passion fruits, and tropical citrus tones, but again, the rotted fruit seems to rear its head and its really annoying

overall: The rotted fruits just ruins this for me. You have some real nice tones on both the nose and palate, but then there is just this aspect of rotten fruit that really detracts from the wine

  • 2007 Schweiger Vineyards Chardonnay 88 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

nose: good nose with nice depth and tones of butter, mangoes, oranges and bits of white florals

taste: excellent medium feel with good tones of citrus', mangoes, bits of orange peels and hints of white florals

overall: A very good chard. It has a bit of butter to it, but it isn't too much and it works with the wine. Good balance, this just didn't really seem to have that next level of depth or flavors

  • 2005 Schweiger Vineyards Merlot 87 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

nose: solid nose of red berries, red currants and red cherries. Fairly standard nose that is rather boring, but is fairly good at the same time

taste: good and polished medium feel with balanced tones of red berries, red currants, cherries and some bits of red fruits. Smooth tannins and decent depth, but much like the nose, fairly standard

overall: A very good wine, but not much more then that. It works well, but at the same time doesn't stand out in the pack

  • 2004 Schweiger Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District

nose: more classically inclined with tones of dill, bell pepper, dark red cherries, leather, and red currants. Good nose with good balance and nice depth

taste: medium/full bodied with good tannins and balanced tones of cranberries, dark red cherries, leather and red currants

overall: a real nice quality cab. Has good body to it with a smooth feel. The tannins aren't all that big right now and this is a good cab for the price

Flight 3 - Roy Estate & Signorello (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Roy Estate Proprietary Red 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: rich and dense nose with balanced tones of red currants, red cherries, red fruits and cranberry tones. Good purity on the fruit with good depth to add to an expressive, but tight, nose

taste: big tannins and full bodied tones of dark berries, oak, red currants, red cherries and cranberry tones. The tannins are a bit overpowering right now, but there is real good balance and depth on the tones

overall: very young. When the tannins pull back a bit and the wine rounds more into form, this could really get better. Very attractive with a nice red fruit core that is pure and tasty

  • 2005 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very pure and deep nose of red currants, red cherries, bits of red florals, cranberries, and a bit of fresh picked berries. There is real good layering on the nose already, and though it was a bit tight, it really had a presence and expression on it

taste: Big and rich with chewy and dense tannins along with full bodied tones of red currants, red cherries, cranberries, and all sorts of mixed berry tones. Great purity on the fruit with real good depth. Has a real silky feel on the palate

overall: this can really be a stunner with time. The nose is tight and the tannins are pretty big, but it is showing off a lot of promise right now. Great depth and purity on both the nose and palate as well to round it all off

  • 2007 Signorello Estate Seta 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: nice nose of stone fruits, lemon peels, a lot of mineral tones along with tasty and tart citrus tones

taste: very good and crisp lighter feel with medium+ acidity and well balanced tones of stone fruits, lemon peels and mineral tones

overall: A perfect summer or sipping white. Would pair well too with lighter fish. Has a good crispness to it on both the nose and palate

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2007 Signorello Estate Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very nice nose of orchard fruits, oranges, butter and some bits of tangerines. Fairly textbook california chardonnay on the nose with good depth, but much layering

taste: excellent medium/full feel with good tones of oranges, marmalade, butter, and tangerines. Good medium acidity gives this a spine, but its well in balance with the wine

overall: a very good chard. It was a real textbook cali chard and didn't really bring a next level of depth or complexity that would really make this wine a lot better. Should be good with some fatty fish or roasted chicken

  • 2005 Signorello Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: perfumed and elegant tones of cedar, dark red cherries, cranberries, dark spices. Has real good depth right now as well and has a robust side to it as well

taste: elegant and silky medium/full body with good supporting tannins along with well balanced tones of cedar, tobacco, dark red cherries, cranberries, and bits of spice tones

overall: Seems to be drinking great right now, but has good supporting tannins for aging. Well balanced with a real elegant style to it that makes it really attractive

  • 2005 Jack Larkin Merlot 92 Points

taste: smooth and polished medium feel with good tannins and tones of red berries, red cherries, red currants, dark berries and a touch of oak. The feel is really good and tasty with a plumpness to it

overall: a real quality merlot. Great depth and very expressive, this could use a little bit of time to fully come together, but it is really good right now

  • 2005 Larkin Cabernet Franc 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

taste: excellent medium feel with good tannins and plush tones of bell pepper, red florals, red cherries, and bits of mixed berries. Nice depth and has a nice silky quality to it

overall: A really good cab franc. Well balanced with a good mix of classic CF tones and new world fruit

  • 2005 Larkin Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: rich and full nose that is really pungent in the glass with great tones of red licorice, red cherries, red currants and all sorts of various berry tones. Great depth and balance with good purity on the fruit

taste: Full bodied and rich with chewy tannins and tasty tones of red licorice, red cherries, red currants, a touch of oak and red fruits. The tannins aren't overpowering, but are showing off the youth of the wine

overall: A real quality cab. Good depth already with big chewy tannins that show off the youth, but there is also a lot of promise with the great pure fruit

taste: Pure and silky full bodied feel with good tannins and plush tones of red cherries, red fruits, red florals, and bits of red currants. Very elegant on the palate with a seamless quality to it

overall: a beautiful cab. Has great fruit to it and a real elegant side while still having a muscular sense to it. Rich and pure, this is just real silky smooth and polished, but can improve with a few more years of age on it

taste: great full body to the wine with plush tannins that show themselves, but aren't very hard either. Pure and deep tones of red cherries, red currants, red berries, and some red licorice tones. Very classy feel as well

overall: A great young cabernet. Full bodied with great pure tones on both the nose and palate with loads of depth. The tannins are very good right now and show off the youth of the wine, but its extremely good right now

  • 2006 Howell at the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

nose: has a really good and dark profile that is a bit tight, but with very good tones of black currants, black cherries, anise and some creme de cassis

taste: somewhat brooding and dark with rich tannins and full bodied tones of black cherries, black currants, and anise. Rich and with real good depth, but is showing its youth right now

overall: young, but there seems to be a real interesting Cab hiding underneath. A more dark profile from the 05 this also had a bit of a brooding quality to it as well

Flight 6 - Stag's Leap (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay Karia 90 Points

nose: very nice tropical nose with a zesty backdrop and really good tones of tangerines, mangoes, lemon peel and some mineral undertones poking through as well. good depth with a lighter sense to it on the nose

taste: Lovely medium feel with good medium acidity and tropical tones of mangoes, tart citrus', lemon peels, tangerines and some bits of vanilla beans. Well balanced with real good weight as well

overall: a real quality chard. Shows off its Cali-ness without going the big butter and oak route. Well balanced with good tones on both the nose and palate and good acidity to make this refreshing, but not overbearing

  • 2006 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Artemis 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: Great classic nose of cedar, Dark red cherries, Black currants, some bits of menthol, leather, and cranberries. Real good depth and a bit tight right now, but has a real robustness on the nose

taste: Full bodied with chewy and big tannins along with well balanced tones of cranberries, black currants, cedar, and dark red cherries with a bit of menthol poking through. The tannins are a bit coarse right now, but there is some real good depth showing as well with this

overall: Quite young and in need of patience, but this is a real good and classic Cali Cab. Well balanced with good depth on both the nose and palate, this has good fruit and warmth to it while having a restrained sensibility

  • 1995 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

nose: very well balanced and somewhat refined nose of dark red cherries, leather, sour cranberries, cedar, cassis, bits of pencil lead and dark red fruits. Has a wafting quality out of the glass and a resolved nature that comes with age

taste: Great balanced and medium/full feel with good tannins that are backed up by excellent tones of dark red cherries, leather, cedar, bits of spice and cassis. Coming off as mature on the palate, but still has a way to go as the tannins are still showing themselves off

overall: Showing its maturity, but this also seems like it has a way to go as well. A nice treat that the rep from Stag's Leap brought out for the tasting, this was very well balanced and had a layering to it on both the nose and palate that age can bring

Flight 7 - Diamond Creek and Gemstone (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace 92 Points

taste: massive tannins with great and balanced tones of red fruits, red cherries, red currants, bits of black currants, cedar, and some bits of berries. Very good depth pokes through the brutal tannins on this

overall: hide it in a very dark corner of the cellar right now. Well balanced with a great nose that you'd expect from diamond creek, and showing a lot of youth that one would also expect from a diamond creek this young as well.

  • 2006 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

nose: elegant and pretty nose of red florals, perfumes, mineral rich earth tones, red currants and deep tones of red cherries. Excellent depth with real good expression, but is fairly tight and has a nuanced nature to it

taste: great medium/full feel that is backed up by massive tannins and well balanced tones of red currants, mineral rich earth, red florals, cedar, and red cherries. Extremely young on the palate with the tannins shredding the back end

overall: Brutally young. This is a cab that will need a good amount of time as there is a more elegant touch to it that needs to work itself out. Excellent depth with great balance on both the nose and palate showing through already

  • 2006 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill 94 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

nose: very deep and pure nose with lovely tones of red fruits, red currants, red cherries, cedar, and hi-toned notes of fresh picked berries. Very elegant with a satiny take on it, though it is also a bit tight right now

taste: full bodied with big tannins and deep tones of cedar, cassis, red cherries, red currants, and a good helping of mixed berries. There is a real polish on the tones, but the tannins are a bit oppressive right now

overall: This is in need of a lot of aging. There seems to be a stunning cabernet hiding underneath, but it just needs a patient hand. There is great depth and polish on both the nose and palate right now

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Gemstone Facets 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

overall: Needs a slight bit of time, but this is a pretty bordeaux blend. Excellent depth with a real good and pure expression on it. Though young, this is extremely drinkable right now and is very pretty

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2006 Gemstone Cabernet Sauvignon Ten 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Yountville

nose: dark, exotic, and somewhat brooding nose of black cherries, black currants, dark spices, and dark berries. Great depth with a lot of richness on the tones, but still very balanced

taste: very young and rich on the palate with full bodied tones of dark spices, dark berries, black cherries, cranberries, and some bits of black currants. Good tannins exist right now, but they aren't too much right now

overall: This should really round into form in another 5 or 7 years. Great depth on both the nose and palate with a lot of polish on both as well. This has all of the ability to be a stunning wine and is a great wine right now. With a few hours decant, this can be approached right now

Flight 8 - Heitz (5 Notes)

  • 2004 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

nose: great and classic nose that one would expect from a martha's with tones of mint, cedar, red currants, red cherries, and some bits of black currants and berries. Great depth, but fairly tight at the same time

taste: very young with big tannins and a very good medium/full feel and tones of cedar, mint, red cherries, red currants, and bits of mixed berries. Quality depth right now, but the tannins are very oppressive right now

overall: this really could turn into something great. The underlying material is there and one just needs patience to let to fully reveal itself. Great depth on both the nose and palate, but the youth is showing itself right now in a big way

  • 2004 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very good nose of red fruits, red cherries, cedar and some bits of cassis. Well balanced with nice depth, but nothing is really standing out

taste: excellent medium/full feel with good tannins and well balanced tones of leather, cassis, red fruits, and cedar tones. Good depth and the tannins aren't too much right now

overall: An excellent cab. Has some together a bit better since I last tasted it. Good balance with good tones, this does everything well, but nothing really great

taste: Full bodied with big and chewy tannins with excellent tones of cedar, cassis, cranberries, and red cherries. The tannins are pretty big right now and are showing off the youth of the wine

overall: A young cab that will need some time to really show itself. Has a more brooding quality to it and the edges are a bit rough right now

  • NV Heitz Cellar Tawny Port 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very rich with chocolate, black cherries, raisins and a fair amount of plum tones. A touch of heat and its not too big, but not massively deep either

taste: bold fuller feel with big tones of chocolate, black cherries, and a good amount of raisins. Some heat hits on the back end as well and there is a slight disjointedness to this

overall: This is good for the general price. I wouldn't say that its on the same level as a portugese tawny, but it is a solid wine

  • 2007 Heitz Cellar Chardonnay 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: good citrusy nose of tropical fruits, lemon peels, bits of oranges, and round tones of pears

taste: good medium feel with medium+ acidity and tones of pears, lemon peels, and oranges. Well balanced with good weight as well

Flight 9 - Hestan (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Hestan Vineyards Chardonnay 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: buttery tones strike right off the bat along with tones of tangerines, meyer lemons, and navel oranges. Good balance with the fruit balancing out the oak a bit

taste: full bodied with medium acidity and rich tones of tangerines, peaches, meyer lemons, and navel oranges. Quality feel with good acidity and there isn't much noticeable butter either

overall: A real good chard. Very californian, but it uses the style well and the citrus tones are very well balanced and distinct

  • 2005 Hestan Vineyards Merlot Stephanie 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: nice nose of cedar, red florals, blueberries, and silky tones of red fruits. Nice balance but lacking some depth and very straightforward

taste: good medium feel with tones of red florals, red currants, blueberries, spice, and a heavy dose of oak on the back end that is fairly annoying

overall: A solid merlot, but the oak is a bit much. A nice nose with good tones, this is an easy drinking merlot that is good, but far from great

  • 2005 Hestan Vineyards Stephanie Proprietary Red 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

nose: very good nose of red licorice, spice tones, red cherries, and various tones of fresh berries. Good balance with good fruit, but a bit tight right now

taste: excellent medium/full feel with good tannins and tones of spices, red currants, red cherries, berries and some oak tones. The tannins are a bit tough right now and this feels like its holding back

overall: A young wine that will need time. Good balance, this was tight on both the nose and palate and showing off its youth. This should round into form with some more time and be a real nice wine
