2017 Castle Rock Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valleymore |
8/31/2020 - elevwine Likes this wine: 91 pointsThe $12.99 price tag clearly influences this review. Bought several decent Napa cabs (e.g. Mica) and saw this wine. A “reserve” at this price? Worth a flyer. What you pay for a small snort of anything Napa at your local eatery. Waited a week because I thought it might just be a bad joke by my wine shop. It’s not. Really decent wine, dark fruit, moderate complexity, mocha and cedar notes, some dustiness, medium finish. Frankly a very serious wine at a ridiculously low price. Balance a bit off but still quite good. If you can find this sub-$20, buy lots of it and make it your weeknight wine

2016 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valleymore |
10/29/2020 - Wine Lover 1964 Likes this wine: 90 pointsBlind tasted against 2017 Artemis and like this better. Nice nose and tannins that I think will age nice. $20 less than Oakville with not too much of a drop off. Try last one 2026 as Napa was a "98" in 2016

2013 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valleymore |

Tannins and oak were much better integrated than in the previous bottles I drank, which is expected, and fruit was still strong to provide a great balance and a pleasant experience. Not overly complex but just the confirmation that drinking even a not too expensive cab before 5-7 years should be avoided, if possible.

Red fruits dominate with minerals but the oak and wood is just too gritty and dry for my taste. There are silky smooth wines then there is this. There is notable bottle variation that I can see even in my TN across my bottles consumed over 2 years.

2012 Bodegas Borsao Garnacha Campo de Borja Tres Picosmore |
3/24/2015 - DesMarteau Likes this wine: 91 pointsconcur on the QPR value of this...tasted blind would rock peoples worlds....funny how the mental framing of a $12 bottle doesn't get me excited to drink it even though I know it's good. dark opaque purple, fruit forward concentrated. basically a deep chocolate covered cherry with kirsh, licquor, a little mint and menthol...more coating chocolate and a long finish. only knock is it's extracted, candied and a little hot. will take time to settle and will always be of the modern style.

1/19/2021 5:25:00 AM - I've been a big CDV Cab (and Merlot!) fan up to the 2012 vintage when they shifted away from purchased fruit - and raised prices - the wines seem harder, less fruity, less nuanced, less elegant. For me, their Cabs have always needed at least 7 years in the cellar and at least 2 hours in the decanter, but the 2012 and 2013 reg bottling have not shown nearly as well as almost any of the early 20xx bottlings. Holding mine as well, hoping they come around. Same for me with the 2013 Reserve Cab.
